Orioles still pursuing Ike Davis

Oh my. Everything else being equal, which player would you prefer?

.310 BA, .330 OBP

.240 BA, .340 OBP

Babypowder, it was fearthenoodle who set the parameters. I worked within the parameters he set. You went outside by claiming OPS was equal in his question. Now, using his criteria - AND ONLY his criteria, would you like to offer your answer? (knowing that no two players would ever have every formula equal).

If all counting stats were equal if your example, then yes it is very likely player A is the better player. However, that will show up in OPS and wOBA without a doubt... so I'm not even sure what the point of this exercise is to being with.

Secondly, I didn't add anything unrelated. I asked a question regarding the parameters of your example. It was not in any way clear that you meant counting stats from the beginning. You still chose to disagree with me when I asked about OPS, though I do appreciate that you are now backing down from that.

I am glad to hear your reply. I have not backed down, as you put it, from anything. But it was you, and only you, who brought in the unrelated OPS stat. That is why I claimed you were being intellectually dishonest. All the best, from one oriole fan to another oriole fan.

How can you not see that those are not parameters at all? Everything else being equal, in this realm, is the definition of ambiguous. I asked what it meant. You disagreed with me in my hypothetical. It's not difficult to comprehend.

I just said that if the parameters are counting stats then player 1 is probably a more valuable hitter. That was not clear at all.

As I said earlier, Davis is more of an unknown commodity. he could prove greatly valuable. With Smoak, the other guy mentioned with higher OBP last year than Cruz or Morales, we have a pretty good set of data that scream big-risk. i can't foresee Smoak being valuable at all, especially not more valuable than Cruz or Morales, despite the couple extra OBP points in 2013.

True, it would have been clearer if he had expressly stated, "counting stats (and contract) being equal." But it was clear to me that "equal" was not intended to mean formulas like OPS, WAR, waWLL%, Rpos, Rbaser, etc. since we could never, ever, find two players with identical percentages based on formulas when we start with ratios BA and OBP being unequal.

    • I thought his line from his first start was deceptive.  He wasn’t far from having a very decent outing.   But I’m glad to see him take it up a notch this time out.   I’d still option him back to the minors today and call up a reliever.
    • Gonzalez and Krook have been pitching well. Both are lefties. Krook is on the 40 man. I assume one, or both of them will be called up today. Corbin Martin probably next to be DFA'd
    • He also famously lost a ball in his shirt.
    • It has been 2 blowups in 11 AAA games.    We saw with Fujinami last year they will overlook baseball card stats if they like the pitch metrics. As good as he's flashed, it doesn't seem like he would be completely out of consideration for a limited tactical role at some point.    We've already hit bringing Bryan Baker back. I did note Hyde took a nice guy approach in his presser about Akin.    One of the previous blowups, he'd kind of called him out about middle middle pitches.    Last night it was Akin has a good fastball, Matt Olson is great and golly gee could Olson sit fastball after that uncompetitive slider.
    • Last year at about this time, the top four teams in MLB were: TBR .690 BAL .627 TEX .627 ATL .618 This year the top four are: NYY .700 PHI .687 BAL .672 CLE .652 That’s kind of crazy good   The top four teams this year are on pace to win 113, 111, 109 and 106 games, respectively. History tells us that most or all of these teams will fall off their pace eventually   But it certainly feels like these teams have separated themselves from the pack.
    • Remember Eddie Rogers? I was at a BaySox game in 2000, looking at the roster, and was like "Man, this kid is 18 years old and holding his own in AA. He's going to be a star!" But then two things happened: he never really developed, and come to find out he was three years older than his fake Dominincan Republic docs said he was.  But he can always say that he had a Major League season with a 5.000 OPS. Let's see somebody top that.
    • It's 27, but like I said, roughly 26-31 is fairly flat if you average across all MLB players.  Some studies come up with some other age (usually older), but they're often addressing survivor bias incorrectly. They'll just look at productivity by age of MLB players, and not account for playing time. For example, you might find that 33-year-olds hit about as well as 27-year-olds, but that there are three times as many 27-year-olds in the league because 2/3rds of the 33-year-olds have been weeded out of the majors and are providing zero value. And the ones left are the best of the lot. So when doing an aging study you need to add a bunch of ballast to account for that effect in those age groups.
