I guess that could be true, but prior to this year Cord had played 2 professional games at third base. Ever. This year he's gotten that total all the way up to 31. Buck Britton has played twice as many games at third for the Tides as Phelps, and they're hitting roughly the same.

No really good options here.

Buck likes a guy that can field and throw the ball. Phelps has the best fielding pct at 3B of the Norfolk candidates. He is also hot with the bat. He is hitting for over a .330 average in the last 40 days. Switch hitter.

Playing Pearce a lot a 1B is contingent on him getting out of his slump. Davis has been slumping but still knocking in runs. Pearce hasn't done much of anything while slumping. I like Pearce. Hope he starts hitting.

You mean we can't play a guy at 1B if he's in a slump?

Man, we have been violating that rule for a major chunk of the season. Why stop now?

I think Pearce now looks way worse or lost now hitting than Davis does. Literally clueless.

I hope Flaherty gets to shine. I really do.

This season, stranger things have happened and Flaherty contributing to wins in more obvious ways than his usually rap would add to the story.

Just playing Fantasy League here, but if Manny is out for the rest of the year, would anyone want to try and trade for any of the following:

David Murphy - 5.7M this year, FA in 2016

Ben Zobrist - Team option of 7.5M in 2015

Lonnie Chisenhall - 1st yr. Arb eligible in 2015, FA in 2018

Conor Gillaspie - 1st yr. Arb eligible in 2016, FA in 2019

I'd put Chase Utley on this list but his contract is ridiculous - 15M vesting at 500 AB through 2018.

Obviously it would take a lot to get some of these guys, but would you do it to keep us strong for the playoff push this year and set up a Manny potential move to SS next year (assuming the knees can take it)? Personally, I'd be real curious if TB would deal Zobrist.

Murphy is a poor 2B - if we didn't trade for him on July 31, he is really of no use now.

Zobrist is not going to clear all the way through waivers - either some has already claimed him and that ship has sailed - or some will claim him.

Chisenhall is 25 years old, cheap, controllable and OPSing .817 - ain't happening

Gillespie is 27 years old, cheap, controllable and OPSing .814 - ain't happening

      Well, good on posters who proved the SSS side of "Guards Ball." I just found it striking in terms of the narrative in that article, which was basically the same as what most around here were complaining the O's lacked: clutch hitting, passing the baton, aggressive running, getting runners in from third, etc. I guess the real bottom line is "whatever works." Which of course varies from case to case. The old Bill James postseason wisdom was that HRs are the ticket, since you face good pitching and get so few hits. So back to you, Elias, keep crunching those numbers...

      First, the had a jump in 23’ given how terrible they had been previously, which conditions many fans in the marketplace not to care. They simple weren’t relevant for years. So one very good regular season will not undue years of being bad/irrelevant and treating your customers terribly. Next, I think they missed an opportunity in the offseason by not doing enough by way of big/bold attention grabbing moves. Now I acknowledge that this was most likely due to the ownership flux/transition. I believe they got an attendance/marketplace engagement boost when they changed owners and when they traded for Burnes. However, I believe we would have seen more engagement attendance with say a big Gunnar extension and/or bringing in a big time FA.   IMO this would have created more buzz before the season (say around the time people make season tix decisions - IMO before Christmas is when some people make those bigger purchases). All of this is to say, that it will take time and effort on the organizations part because of how bad of a stain that the Angeloses left. I still have friends and colleagues who refuse to support the Orioles and attend games due to the damage that was done. Rubenstien & co are not going to be able to undo 30 years of awfulness overnight. But IMO it is not enough to simply call it “a new chapter”. They have to make new/different actions to distinguish themselves from who the Orioles were/used to be under the Angelos regime.

      Just checking in on Gameday, Yankees looking incredibly vulnerable.  Should be the Os out there.  Super lame.  Whichever team wins this series I hope gets knocked out by CLE or DET.
