2015 Travis Snider Trade

Brault was very good. Nice call.

He was ok I would not say very good. He went just 4 innings and threw 82 pitches. He was on the ropes in the 4th but then got to face the bottom of the order and finished it with a K. When you watch the National League games it just highlights the difference in having the pitcher hit. Not only is that almost an automatic out it changes the complexion of so many innings. The Dodgers got three outs from Tilman in 4 innings and it also puts lot of pressure on the number 8 hitter.

Yes sir, and Tillman also got bailed out when otherwise the Dodgers had something going. After a shaky first inning, the #8 guy got a base hit with 1 out. They had to sacrifice and Tillman just had to get Utley to end the inning.

I could never root for Brault and that stupid tattoo he has. Looks like the guy has stage 2 greyscale.

Wha???? :scratchchinhmm:

20160307pdPiratesSports01.jpg

"Brault looks like a ballplayer. In stature and in pitching style, he bears a resemblance to the Atlanta Braves’ Tom Glavine, a left-hander who built a Hall of Fame career on a low-90s mph fastball, deceptive delivery and pinpoint control.

Brault looks like a rocker, too, from his jet-black hair and California-cool smile to the sleeve tattoo that snakes up his right, non-throwing arm in a honeycomb pattern he calls “futuristic.”

For Brault, life in the spotlight started with bit parts in school musicals in El Cajon, Calif., near San Diego. He tried out for choir junior year and discovered then, he says, “Maybe I’m kind of good at this.” In his last musical, Damn Yankees, he played Joe Hardy, a young Washington Senators baseball player who — spoiler alert — homers to win the pennant.

“That part worked out pretty well,” Brault said.

In baseball, Brault was always good, but never the best. Music was a passion that somehow seemed a more realistic career pursuit. He was a vocal performance major at Regis University, a small Division II school in Denver, when the Orioles drafted him in the 11th round in 2013.

“You can go back to music,” Brault said. “You can't really go back to baseball.”

This was a fair trade. Both Tarpley and Brault have the potential to make the majors, while neither looks to be a huge impact player. If one becomes TJ MacFarland and the other becomes Brad Brach, that would meet or exceed what the Pirates could hope for from this trade. In Snider's case, we're hoping for two years of production reasonably close to Nick Markakis, though in a higher power, lower OBP package. I think we got the better end of this one if both sides get the mid-range of possible outcomes, but either side might look good if someone hits their ceiling or flops entirely.

Funny to look back on my opinion at the time. Snider turned out to be a bust, but that was far from obvious at the time, despite the 20/20 hindsight people employ now to judge the trade. Now Brault has reached the majors rather quickly, and Tarpley isn't lighting the world on fire but he has progressed reasonably well (2.48 ERA in low A last year, 3.91 in high A this year). So, it has turned out very poorly for us.

P.S. -- the meaning of "[if] the other becomes Brad Brach" has changed a lot since January 2015. At the time, Brach was a decent middle reliever, nothing more.

Duquette pulled an Ubaldo with Snider. He bought high on one good half season. That was the issue at the time. I'm not so sure it's entirely 20/20 hindsight. The other issue is Snider was the crown jewel of the 2015 offseason....which is honestly unacceptable. It showed that Duquette had one foot out of the door.

This is what I said at the time.

No hindsight. It was an obvious bad trade immediately.

Your judgment has proven correct, and I certainly can't accuse you of 20/20 hindsight, but if you go back through this thread, it was not "obvious" to the majority of posters.

I just edited that part of my post because I didn't word it particularly well.

I wasn't trying to insult people who liked the trade at the time; but I thought it was a poor trade immediately.

I dont think Brault's ready to start this year. Has only 39 IP in 9 starts oin the minors this year. Then went 4 innings with the Pirates. Super high K rates but if the trade-off is 3-4 innings every start, that isnt so helpful.

And I thought Snider would be great in Camden Yards. Go figure.

    • Didn't see today's game in it's entirety but I will say this.  I feel 100% more confident with Mateo playing second and turning  a DP rather than JH right now.  JH will be fine there.  In time.   But even forgetting his hitting, D wise he just isn't there yet.   And yes I know the metrics say he is fine.  But to me, using the eye test, he looked very shaky fielding and throwing,
    • I like Kevin.  He is constantly improving.  My only beef is that he doesn't seem to understand that a foul ball isn't always out of play.   A ball can be hit foul, but still be in the field of play.
    • My preferred day 3 WR would have been Troy Franklin, but he apparently had a bad combine on positional drills (which might have been because he had the flu.)  And he got picked by Denver pretty early.   Devontez Walker is kind of intriguing.  He's 6'2", barely.   A bit on the skinny side but ran in the mid-4.3s.  His route tree is pretty limited, mostly short quickouts/slants and go/post routes. But he's really good at the deep routes.  Sort of a discount DK.  He's reported to have good hands and good deep ball tracking ability as well.  We have to see how that translates in the pro game.
    • Adley looks way more energized and McCann is veteran catcher who is good defensively and handles the pitchers well.  Doesn't really make sense to wear Adley out when the O's are using him at the top of the lineup.
    • Just seems like a more controlled swing from the right side, shorter, flatter.
    • He was signed in the Covid year when they only had a 5 round draft, which is why he was undrafted.  Was showing promise bur tore his UCL in 2022.  Pitched a little last year, this is his first full year back.  Nice to see the good outing.
    • What's up with Brandon Young? Out of nowhere (#30 prospect above... undrafted?) he goes 3 IP with 0 hits or walks, and 7 Ks, throwing an otherworldly 26 of 31 pitches for strikes, in Bowie's game today.
