I'll be watching and commenting in this thread today. If anyone has any questions I will field them as well. Think of this as an online game chat/question and answers. I'll try to be here all game...

Thanks Tony. I got a question to get things started...

In Roch's blog today, he mentions that Oscar Salazar is an interesting player who could contribute some this year. What type of player is he? I don't really know anything about him.

Guess Jones isn't healthy and the injury was more serious than we thought.

:(

No one who started yesterday is starting today. Scott and Jones probably get the day off as a reward for taking a long road trip.

Jones, and Trembley both said because he was taking out early, that if he was healthy enough to play he would play today to make up for the lost time.

He's not playing so he's not healthy.

He's likely just day-to-day. It sucks that he's not in the lineup for the televised game but I wouldn't read too much into this. Better he rest than try to push it.

Salazar is an interesting guy because he can hit and play several infield positions. Better suited for 3B or 1B, he can fill in at 2B and in the outfield if need be.

He hit very well at Bowie last year and was rewarded with the spring invite this year. He'll get a chance to play everyday at Norfolk and if the O's need a utility guy or right-handed bat, i could see him getting a call up.

He's not young, so he's not a prospects, but he's a solid AAAA guy.

Certainly not the lineup i think most of us were hoping for, but hey, it's baseball.

The thing about Salazar is that he is an exceptional fastball hitter. Everything else, not as much. The bulk of his power success/ success in general last season in Bowie came via his ability to torture fastballs in the zone. It's going to be interesting to see how he does in AAA for a full season given that he's only spent limited time there in the past.

Tony, it's obviously very early, but give us your best prediction for how the Birds' bullpen shakes out in terms of pitchers and roles. Thx.

We've certainly got a lot of power arms to pick from. Aquino, Bierd, and Sarfate all have power arms to go with Bradford, Sherrill and Walker. Cherry has thrown the ball well this spring and don't forget about power arms like Hoey and McCrory who will both start in the minors.

    • It’s not easy hitting in your pajamas.
    • Baker blows up in about 1 of every 3 appearances, just like he did here.
    • I don't know.   I also don't care.  I mean we're all Orioles fans...we all know Brady hit 50 homers out of the leadoff spot and I don't remember complaining about him not hitting lower in the order.  That's the funny thing about sports fans, they all want to fix "good enough" by tinkering with things...Gunnar is an MVP candidate out of the leadoff spot, why change anything? 6 leadoff homers is pretty great, it's jumping on the opposing pitcher and presumably, you're already up 1-0 in the first.  Or if you've given up a run or two in the top of the first and Gunnar leads off with a homer, you're answering back right away. I'll also cue @DrungoHazewoodto come in and remind everyone that lineup optimization doesn't work...or really matter.
    • You laugh, but the advanced stats show that Urias fully deserved that GG.   He hasn’t played as well defensively in 2023-24, though.   Urias had another hit yesterday and has a 1.007 OPS over his last 10 games.  He had a terrible April but has hit well since then, though only seeing occasional action.
    • I saw a highlight of him drilling a line-drive double up the LCF gap, which is the sort of thing he was doing before he got called up and didn't do at all in the big leagues. Hopefully that's a good sign.
    • What was Means’ ERA in AAA?  Or Suarez’s? SSS. Something pretty weird was happening in AAA those first few weeks. Also, I’m never dinging vets that go down there. Especially relievers. They should be treating it like ST and working on adjustments to have success at the MLB level.  A shuttle of Krook, Baker, Martin, Zimmerman, and eventually McDermott, makes a lot of since for the last bullpen spot. I left out Vespi because I think the next time we option him that we have to DFA him because he’s already been optioned 4 times this year. The max is 5.
    • How does the board view this prospective trade?  Orioles send Norby, Bradfield Jr and Povich to Marlins for Luzardo?  Sounds reasonable.
