Sandberg resigns as Phillies manager

Quitter.

Lol, yeah, not a glutton for punishment.

Hard to imagine he'll get another job managing a team ever again after - basically - quitting because they stink.

He's waiting for Maddon to implode so he can have his dream job.

Just watching Sandberg's interactions with his players during the Phillies-O's series, it was apparent he'd lost the team.

Yeah, did y'all see Utley jawing at the pitching coach when their outfielder was pitching? Utley's never been known to squawk, about anything.

This happened 4 days earlier; Ryno & the PC were jawing with their relief pitcher:

And, finally:

The most jarring thing about the Phillies' after-midnight news Tuesday night that saw Chase Utley in the manager's office, standing alongside the assistant general manager and head team athletic trainer, wasn't that the oft-injured, 36-year-old second baseman was being placed on the disabled list with a right-ankle injury.

It was that the news appeared to completely blindside manager Ryne Sandberg.

Just nuts. Andy will have his work cut out for him. He's lucky Gillick's still there to be a buffer with that ownership.

Midseason, he quit on the Cubs as a player in '94 because he wasn't playing up to his standards. It's all about your legacy Ryne. Never forget that. mbdotcom suggested it might be in preparation for MacPhail to come on board. There might be something to that IMO.

My feeling is that the front office offered to let him resign on his own terms to save face rather than just firing him outright. You see this kinda thing in the corporate world fairly frequently. It was definitely clear that he wasn't gonna be the guy.
