Tyler Wilson Hopes To Be Part Of Orioles' 2016 Plans

Lohse is probably happening. I believe. I honestly think Wright is fine. I honestly think Wilson is better than Gonzalez. And will be an optionable swing man this season. I honestly think Worley is a fine four or five pitcher in the AL East. I honestly think that Gausman will replace Wright and Wilson will go down. Honestly.

You really think we get Lohse? That's decent insurance at least.

I don't agree Worley is a 4 or 5:) He seems best suited for a long man out of the pen.

From Roch, great guy. Takes responsibility.

“I bear a lot of responsibility for the way the game went today,” Wilson said last night. “Got two quick outs and I have to be able to shut the inning down a little faster. That’s my role, that’s my job, to come out there and give our team a chance to get back into the dugout and score some runs. That’s exactly what they did. I just have to be a little more efficient, a little better next time.”

I didn't think Wilson's command was very sharp last night. The pitch that Bautista hit for a double was an absolute meatball, center cut and belt high. On the other hand, the pitch where he struck out Encarnacion was filthy.

I agree with both.

I love Wilson, but with a fully rested bullpen, why is Buck turning to Wilson for the 7th and 8th innings of a close game? We saw Givens too, who has been struggling. No sight of Brach or O'Day in the 7th and 8th innings of a close game? Not a HUGE deal, but I thought it was a little curious.

We were losing 3-1 when Wilson entered. I don't think Buck uses Brach or O'Day too often when we are down two runs.

The 7th made sense. Bundy and TJ had both pitched in the most recent game Saturday. However, we got back a run in the bottom of the 7th, making it a 1 run ballgame in the 8th. Seems like prime time for Brach, who had not pitched since Friday. I like that Buck has confidence in Tyler...but perhaps not that much.

I think the same thing happened when Wright gave up the big hit. They were just like give up pitches. As much as we used to hate the whole "Kevin Gregg never gives in" quote, it would have been nice if Wright and Wilson would have just used the empty base last night, and tried to make a quality pitch. If you walk the guy so be it. I'm not suggesting "nibbling", but against the Jays, you just can't throw them meatballs and say go beat me. They will.

I just noticed that my earlier post that you quoted mistakenly referred to Wright. I was referring to Wilson's pitches in the 7th inning. I think you understood that, but I've edited my post that you quoted so that nobody else will be confused.

Nice! Looking forward to it. If he could stick in the rotation that would give us a boost.

    • The Diamondbacks absolutely destroy LHP (.857 OPS, tops in ML) and the Orioles are going to start back-to-back lefties in this series. Don't get me wrong, I would  not change the rotation now with things going well, but I'm going to be very impressed if they get another good start from Means after what Irvin just accomplished. The Orioles are in a much better spot with regard to starter diversity than they were in 2023 and I think that's a very good thing for OPACY.
    • I think the bar is pretty low.  Don’t be as stingy as John Angelos.   Nobody’s expecting him to be Steve Cohen.
    • It's gracious of you to admit it's a matter of personal bias. In just his first of two seasons with the Orioles, Belle provided a lot more offense (37 homers, 117 RBIs, 143 OPS+)  than several of the players you did list combined in their entire Orioles careers, e.g. Clark + Carter + Thome--all of whom, moreover, were much further along "a downward trajectory from age." Belle's first season with the Orioles was basically equivalent to the popular and listed Nelson Cruz's single season (40 HR, 108 RBI, 137 OPS+). I also disagree that Angelos and the Orioles' front office should have known that Belle's days as a feared slugger were over: he had played 143, 158, 161, and 163 games leading into his age 32-years-old 1999 season with the O's. The HR totals during those seasons with the Indians and White Sox were 50, 48, 30, and 49. He played in 161 and 143 games with the Orioles in 1999 and 2000. The degenerative hip condition that ended his career was not diagnosed until the spring of 2021, a half year after his second season with the Orioles. The sight of Belle in spring training nonetheless trying his hardest to run down the first base line on essentially one leg left no doubt in my mind that, as he had expressed to the media, he was absolutely dedicated to honoring the generous contract Angelos had bestowed. He had to be ordered to give up trying to play.
    • Then Who goes to the Pen?
    • Kimbrel was good, no doubt, But I'm with Irvin. Who could have possibly seen the last 4 starts coming? tonight was more of the same, Hope he keeps it up.
    • I think it was the 1997 team that had Mussina, Erickson, Key...   Could be this staff is the best since the 80s but we'll have to wait and see.  I'm not ready to say it's close to better than the dynasty staffs of the 60s through the early 80s.  Those teams didn't just have good individual years but many years strung together.  That's what the O's haven't had in so long and need to get back to.
