It wasn't very long ago that the idea of a $140 million payroll for the Orioles would have been pure fantasy. Now, it looks as if it?s going to be a reality.

According to figures calculated by BaseballReference.com, the Orioles? estimated payroll for 2016 is $139 million - up from $113 million a year ago. That's a 23 percent increase.

I hate to see anyone... even PA, waste money

Could have won 75 games with 100 million... and been in great position to achieve sustainable winning by 2017/2018

So maybe we over achieve and win 80-82 games with a roster bloated by players past there prime and no hope of making a WS run anytime in the next 4-6 years

They are spending, but not spending efficiently.

Neither of those numbers are right, by why ruin a good narrative.

It is more like 117m and 131m after deferrals.

Wake me up when we get to 140m. Or 150m like some claim is the "goal".

Would it surprise anyone if we really didn't do much from now to season, and saw only a 12% payroll increase? Not me.

According to BB-ref, at $139.0 projected payroll we'd be 13th, which I believe is right where we've been the last 3 years or so. We are just keeping up with the Joneses. The list:

LAA $233.5

NYY $229.8

BOS $198.2

DET $199.6

SFG $172.1

CHC $163.9

TEX $150.3

WSN $144.9

STL $143.0

TOR $141.3

SEA $141.0

NYM $139.4

BAL $139.0

LAA $138.7

Obviously, there are still numerous free agents out there and this list will change, but the numbers will only be going up.

Good catch. We're not getting better, we're just getting older.

The overall MLB payroll only goes one direction, and that's up. There's more money in the sport, chasing the same amount of overall talent. But I certainly don't think it's reasonable to accuse the Orioles of being cheap.
