Good Ubaldo!

As a counterpoint to the "Bad Ubaldo" threads, I offer a positive perspective on our TOR pitcher. Cal me an optimist. Just don't get too concerned about whether he really is a TOR; the Orioles paid him $50Mil for some reason.

Last season, Ubaldo posted career bests in BB/9 and K/BB! Additionally, he maintained an 8.2 K/9 in 184 innings pitched over 32 starts. Maybe Ramon really did have a positive impact. Maybe he can have one on Odrisamer, too.

All right, have at it...just lay off the face and the family jewels. Like I said, I am optimist and I'm trying to share some positive vibes. Go Baldy!

He has been fighting the demons of his awkward mechanics for a long time. He tries hard to master them. If he gets in the groove enough, he can help us win some games. I understand how people get frustrated with him. I know he gets frustrated, too.

Ubaldo was trying some new pitches. So they didn't work all that well during his first ST game. However, ST is for practice. Ubaldo will be fine come the regular season, if not before the regular season.

Ubaldo is our staff ace by default of lowest SP ERA last season. Also lowest FIP at 4.01, even lower than Chen's 4.16.

I've maintained before that I'm content with what we have in UJ. On any given start, he, probably more than any other starter on our roster (at the moment), is most capable of going out and throwing 7+ IP with a bunch of K's. There are gonna be a lot of turds in there....and his ERA probably will be no better than 3.5, but as far as a mid to back end, I'm good with it. I'd like for his consistency to take a step forward this year.

Considering that his ERA is over 4 in 3 out of the last 4 years, a 3.5 would be a sign of love from the baseball gods.

His ERA was league average last year, worse than that in 2014, better than average in 2012 and worse than average in 2011.

His 19 win season from 2010 can now be considered an outlier year and without that season he's been about a league average pitcher his career. Hopefully the offense pushes him over the middle and he can be a winning pitcher with about a 4.00 ERA, 15-10 would be optimistic but realistically so.
