FiveThirtyEight has some of the more interesting sports stuff out there if you're into stats and projections and what not.

Looks like today they unveiled a big new MLB feature that will be continuously running during the season with projection updates, just like their NBA and March Madness projects.

Just been checking it out. There's a bunch of interesting stuff.

Here's the article explaining all of it.

Here's their season prediction chart. (Their "Elo" rating system currently has the O's as the 13th best team in MLB and at 36% to make the playoffs.)

Here's the Orioles specific page, which has win percentages for each game played based on the team, starting pitcher, and home field/rest.

And perhaps of particular interest to the history buffs, here's the page they call "The Complete History of MLB." It has a super detailed interactive graph that tells you their Elo rating for every team after every game in MLB history. The graph in particular highlights which team they rated as the best in MLB at each given moment. According to the chart, they had the O's recently had a turn in the spotlight--they were the highest rated team from mid-September through the playoffs of 2014. Looks like (and I realized after I posted this) that they use slightly different methodology for this chart than for the others. It claims the Blue Jays as MLB's best team at the beginning of this season even though the season projection page says the Cubs have been the highest rated team all season long. Hmm... Pretty interesting to browse nonetheless.

Is anyone bothered by the fact that Jake Arietta's ELO score (10/7/15...might even be higher currently based on when the article was published) is the 11th highest peak score in ML history, just .2 ahead of the peak of Sandy Koufax?
