So did you mean the Nats and Strasburg or the Jays and Batista?

Nats, was on mobile at the time, and it was early.

My guess is the Nats don't think Strasburg's elbow will hold up for the extent of his new contract.

Last I heard repaired elbows tend to last about six years.

Good chance the Nats let Strasburg walk. They believe that players who come back from TJ surgery have a limited shelf life before suffering a new injury. That's apparently why they didn't pursue Zimmermann.

I think the Nats let Strasburg go and collect the pick. Giolito replaces him. Roark and Ross have really stepped up.

I could also see him head back west.

The Dodgers would be my guess.

Scherzer - 2021 ($$$)

Gonzalez - 2018 ($12M options that will probably be picked up)

Roark - 2019 (3 years of arb left)

Ross - 2021 (2 years of PRE arb left)

Giolito - clock hasn't started

Yeah that's a pretty stocked rotation at a relatively cheap price. Scherzer is making a lot but $12 for Gio is a great deal and the rest will be making nothing. The Nats won't have much incentive to throw their money at more SP.

They actually need a catcher. Wieters maybe...

Scherzer's money isn't that big when you factor in how much of it is deferred.

Wieters is the best FA C by far next season.

If the Yankees continue to play poorly, and I don't think they will rebound significantly this year, then the real option for a dramatic improvement in 2017 will be the trade deadline this year.

They have three closers that could be unloaded for prospects.

Need a DH? The Yankees have several for contending teams, and if they will eat some salary, they can get good ML ready prospects in return.

That is my fear with the Yankees. I want them to continue to try to build through FA and keep a terrible farm system.

And. it is no sure thing that LA lets Kershaw walk, or Chicago lets Arrieta walk, or that the Os let Manny walk, or that the Nats let Harper walk. All four teams have money and keeping these players at home would seem to be a no brainer.
