The San Francisco Giants took Dietz, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-handed pitcher, in the 29th round of last year's Major League Baseball draft. The 2014 Sandburg graduate then tossed around the idea of going pro.

"I thought about signing," Dietz said. "It was tempting. I was almost sick to my stomach thinking about it."

Instead, Dietz decided to return to Logan Community College. That risked turned into a reward Thursday as the Baltimore Orioles selected Dietz in the second round of the MLB draft.

The signing bonus slot for the 69th overall pick is $934,400. That's approximately $900,000 more than Dietz was offered by the Giants to sign last year.

Although he's committed to Division I powerhouse TCU, Dietz acknowledged his attraction to the Orioles.

"I'd like to sign," he said. "If something happens, I have no trouble going to TCU. But I think I'll sign."

When should we expect to see Dietz throw this season?

Akin debuted a few days ago and Sedlock should be seeing his second outing in Aberdeen soon. After adding Dietz to those two and our new favorite Aussie in Alex Wells, these four would make box scores for the Ironbirds fun to check on a near daily basis.
