Opposing teams have hit .349/.389/.590 against Gausman this year when the Orioles are ahead. Gausman never seems to have a shutdown inning after the Orioles give him a lead. It's very frustrating to watch.

I've seen a few of the harder throwing SP's with them. I'll make note of who next time I see them with it.

I heard earlier this summer that it's a mint chaw. I think one of the guys who cover the O's for 105.7 asked him about it. (EDIT: I've seen articles that he's quit, but it's been an off and on struggle. As of a 2016 reference I saw, sometimes it's tobacco, other times it's mint or coffee grounds and sunflower seeds.) He admits that it's really, really hard to quit and he's struggling with it.

That aside, it does make him look like a moose or camel.

I do find Gausman's dangling mouthpiece habit mildly annoying, but I guess it'll grow on me. Looks immature. He already looks like he's a 17 year old at Riverdale High.

I read somewhere that people wear a mouthpiece now that they bite on while working out. Maybe this is what Gausman is using?
