Boras, Orioles set to discuss Wieters extension

There's only so many catchers out there, too. I think that plays into it. And pitch framing is still very new. But give Big Data Baseball a read. Pretty fascinating.

Re: Caleb. I don't think Britton is the issue. If it's working with Wieters...why change it? I do see where you're getting at due to Britton's movement. But he's been very effective regardless. To that end, I'd like to see framing data per pitcher being caught.

I mainly worry about guys like Gallardo, Bundy and Ubaldo. Guys that live on the black or the bottom of the zone.

FWIW, my issues with Wieters isn't just framing. Blocking pitches is a concern as is sequencing.

Overall, I just don't think Wieters is all that great. He's not bad. But I never bought much into Wieters aside from when he was such a plus defensive catcher and offensive catcher.

I've been watching the framing stuff since day one. I'm the one that posted a link to Mike Fast's original work here. I think study into the phenomenon took a big hit when the Astros picked him up.

As for it being new, I don't think the outside community have discovered anything before the teams since Voros McCracken.

As for Caleb, it wasn't so much about Caleb and Britton as it was my earlier question about bringing in a superior framer as a defensive replacement in save situations. Unless the framer is deficient in other ways, it would seem a no brainer.

I don't think any catcher has had more success in save siyuations than Wieters.

Does an Umpire lose a little of the "Zone" when a catching change is made in the eighth or ninth inning??

He has had seven to eight innings (100 to 115 Pitches) of watching one style of receiving a ball from pitchers. By changing the catcher would he not have to adjust to another style??

I don't think there is anywhere near enough data available to tell one way or another.

I know it is. But how often do catchers get pulled that late in the game? I just don't think the sample size is large enough to be meaningful.

So it would have to get put into the "Variable" category. The defensive replacement for a catcher would come about for several reasons. Catcher A was pinch hit for, Catcher A was pinch run for, Catcher A was injured, Team had a lead and wanted a better defensive catcher behind the plate to preserve a win. I can not think of any other reason to change a catcher unless it is a blow out and you wanted to rest Number 1 catcher for the final 3 innings.

And you only have to worry about Buck getting his own way another couple years anyway.

I hope they find a way to keep Buck. Don't really care too much about Duquette. But certainly need to hold on to Buck. Think he holds this organization to a standard up and down the minors to the majors as best as he can. A rarity.

Tonight another example of poor framing. Should be a 3rd strike to Shaffer. Next pitch double and lead gone. Also "wild pitch" that is typical Wieters poor blocking skills.

Have to disagree with you on both of these.

The pitch to Shaffer was pretty much down the middle of the plate, I could see questioning MW's framing skills if the pitch was on the corner.

While MW could have displayed better technique on the WP, ( I think that He should have kept his body in a lower position) the pitch was short of the plate and in the left handed batter's box. It was a wild pitch.

I think that MW's technique on pitch blocking has been worse since his foot injury. He is just not moving as well to his right in particular. ( That's the side this pitch was on.)

Further, He has caught something like 46 out of 51 games since the injury.

The guy is gassed.

    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
    • How much different? They sat Judge yesterday, they threw their playoff starters for 5+ innings yesterday and today. They are also playing for the best record in the AL. They aren't mailing it in.
    • It’s not just the O’s. I’ve checked the Dodgers who have similar prices and they have a lot of upper deck NLDS games 2 & 3 available. Same for the NLCS. yanks still have seats available also. — In general, I’m sure alot of fans are just gonna wait till the day of to grab tickets.
    • That makes no sense. If they had to win their current series would have looked much different.
    • I agree. You have to wonder if the Yankees are behind him getting hit. Perhaps the ghost of George has struck
