With two weeks of ST to go, where are the O's?

Injuries and under performance happen.  Some teams may be in need on July and aren't right now.  And you are right about the draft choice that was tied to Trumbo.

Do you think that without the attached pick someone would have met or beat the offer the O's made?

Here are my big thoughts on spring training so far:

1.    I'm nervous about the starting pitching.    Tillman's injury is a real blow, and I don't see anyone we are counting on to be in the rotation who is really pitching well.   That could all turn on a dime in April, but I'd be much happier if Gausman, Bundy, Ubaldo, and Miley were all pitching well.    I'm also concerned that the most obvious candidates to replace Tillman haven't really stepped up.   The only reason Lee and Aquino are even in this conversation is that Wright, Wilson, Ynoa and Verrett have all looked pretty bad (well, Ynoa has looked meh).

2.   I'm really impressed with the depth Dan has brought in.   The Rule 5 guys have acquitted themselves well, we have able replacements at every infield spot, and the outfield candidates look good.    Buck's going to have tough choices about who to keep, and Norfolk should be stacked with guys who aren't star prospects but can fill in ably if we have injuries.

3.   The bullpen will be stacked again.    Liranzo will be a force on this team when September rolls around, if not before.

4.   I'm not quite sure what to make of the Pedro Alvarez experiment.

5.   I'm thinking we may see some trades at the end of the spring.

Anyone know how Givens has looked?  I don't stay up late enough to catch more than the first few innings of these west coast WBC games.

1. I don't understand why Buck as limited Aquino's innings.  He seem to be do the best of the candidate but is not being stretch out so far.  I have not heard that Buck is stretching out Nuno which would seem to be a good option.

5. Any guesses about what the trades might be? Starting pitching is the need.  But it is expensive and often unavailable.  Rule 5 trades/

A lot like last year. He has been fortunate though.

And?  I'm just telling you what I read.  Maybe ST results aren't as important to Buck as you thought.

At this point I have no idea on:

1) who the fifth starter is

2) if the Orioles figure a way to carry Tavarez or Santander or even both to start the season.

3) If Gentry makes the team

4) If Mancini makes the team

5) If Drake makes the team

Buck says they are not if you listen to what he really says. He makes fun of the guys who feast on spring fastballs. He reads the back of baseball cards a lot.

Having a good spring when you are battling for a position is important, but you are absolutely right, Buck is all about the track record when it comes to his final decisions with Dan.

    • I don’t think it was weird at all.  EDC said it but I thought it unfolded as expected.  You knew the QBs would go. You knew tons of OT and WR would go.   This was always going to be an offense dominated first round. The Oline and WR depth is in every round. I suspect that they go Oline twice or Oline/WR tonight.  Obviously you never know how the board falls but I think that’s what is likely.   This is mainly going to be an offense draft. EDC said a few weeks ago that they will draft a RB.  My guess is that the RB goes sometime in day 3. They will come out of this draft with at least 2 more Olineman, one WR and one RB.  I suspect they take a safety at some point as well. The question will be do they take 9 players.  The Ravens didn’t feel this was a draft with as many draftable players as years past, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they make some kind of a trade.
    • 1:2 is good.  Elite is a player like Arraez who is 1+:1.
    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
