Over the last 1 and-a-half seasons with the Orioles, Jimenez has been pitched considerably better when he has had 5 or more days' rest, as opposed to the customary 4.

And in his last 2 really good starts (today against the Blue Jays, and last week against the Cardinals), he has had 5 days' rest.

Also, Jose Bautista in his career vs. Jimenez:

Batting Avg: llllllllllll .073 llllll (3-for-41)

On-Base %: llllllllll.llllllll .208

Slugging %: .lllllll.l.llll .098

OBP + SLG: lll.lllllllllllllll .306

Call me nuts,  coo-coo, loony ?   :/ O.o:$

But let's just pretend that Ubaldo pitches the rest of the season more or less like he did tonight.  The Orioles so desperately need somewhat decent starting pitching.  Would Os management consider signing him for one more year at a much more affordable,  reasonable salary?? No, I didn't think so.?

So I will enjoy him as long as I can, even with all of his warts. What a nice pitching performance this night.

The Grand Poo bah of the Ubaldo Jimenez Fan Club

I really hope not! He's had decent stretches in the past, and, without fail, always reverts to bad Ubaldo. Unless its a dirt cheap deal, I think its time to move on.

Wouldnt it be something, though, if we paid him like 1/$7m and he ended up having a career year? The irony woild be amazing.

It's always a pleasant surprise when Good Ubaldo happens.  He's such a Jekyl/Hyde.

Ubaldo "box of chocolates" Jimenez, it's crazy I've never seen a pitcher a who looked like he couldn't make it in rookie league in one start and look like a Cy Young winner in the next.

For better or worse Ubaldo is going to get another chance.  Hope the coaches and Ubaldo review the tape and keep him in this groove.

Based on that chart, I believe this was his best game ever as an Oriole. And you could tell from the first batter of the game that his stuff looked good ... ask Joey Bats about it.

Tonight may or may not have been Jimenez' best game to date in his 3 and-a-half year tenure as an Oriole, but Jose Bautista would not the best barometer used to gauge it ...... Bautista has a career .073 batting average against Jimenez, going 3 for 41 in 48 career plate appearances against him.

Can someone go back through 2014 and tell m ehow many starts do both Tillman and Gausmann have where they have gone 6.2 innings nad given up less than 4 hits?

Ubaldo has 9 where he's done 4 hits or less and 7 of 3 or less. I bet Tillman and Guasman have fewer.

I'll look it up now and report back.

Ok. My reseach is done.

I guess I'd forgotten Tillman used to be a good pitcher.

Since 2014, Tillman has 2 2games where he's had 4 hits or less, including  12 of 3 or less.

As for Gausman, there have only been 8 games where he's gone 6.2 innings and given up 4 hits or less, including 4 of 3 or less. That's what scares me about Gausman. Even though he throws 97+, he's almost never dominant.

And the post I quote above doesn't have all of the good games for Jimenez, just his best ones.

Since 2014, Ubaldo has 15 games where he's gone at least 6.2 innings and give up 4 hits or less including 9 of 3 or less.

Tillman's totals

2017: 0 games of 6.2 innings with 4 hits or less.

2016:
July 16 - 7 innings, 4 hits
july 21 - 7 innings, 4 hits.
July 10 - 7 inning 3 hits
May 24 - 7 innings 3 hits
April 27- 6.2 innings 2 hits.

2015 - June 28 - 7 inning, 4 hits
July 29 - 8.2 innings, 4 hits.
April 6 - 6.2 innings, 4 hits
Aug 22 - 6.2 innings 4 hits
Aug 17 - 7 innings 3 hits
May 1 - 7 innings 3 hits
May 1 - 7 innings 3 hits
July 24 - 7 inning 2 hits
July 18 - 8 innings 1 hit

2014- May 31 - 6.2 innings 4 hits
June 22 - 7 innings 4 hits
Aug 3 - 7 innings 4 hits
Aug 8 - 6.2 innings 4 hits.
July 18 - 6.2 innings 3 hits.
Aug 25 - 7 innings 3 hits
Apri 11 - 8 innings 3 hits
Aug 19 - 8 innings 3 hits.

Gausman's totals.

2017 - 0 games where he's gone 6.2 innings and given up 4 hits or less.

2016 - Sep 14- 8 innings , 4 hits
July 23 - 7 innings, 4 hits

For what it's worth, Max Scherzer has done it 41 times since 2014, while Clayton Kershaw has done it 36 times.

I limited the games in my post to the ones where Ubaldo allowed 0 earned runs.

WIth Tillman providing nothing, Miley getting worse and worse, Gausman failing to turn it around yet, and the shuttle going from Hero in April to Zero since, my perspective on Ubaldo has changed from "we can't afford to keep someone so unreliable" to "we can't afford to get rid of someone who is capable of giving good starts a few times out of ten."
