Don't forget Pedro, in addition to not being able to play in the outfield, is also incapable of playing first and third.  So Buck has options.

i remember that one game on a Sunday maybe two years ago, I think Buck put him in and he was bad. I was down the third base line and he actually moved away from the ball so he would not have to play it. No error. Then a ball was hit in the hole between short and third and never moved and Hardy dove for it. I guess that is why they call him the Bull. "Ole"..

If there is any regular I would choose to be lost for an extended period of time, it would be Davis.  Frankly I'm looking forward to seeing what Mancini can do getting playing time almost every day.  CD has a great glove at 1B and I'm not thrilled about losing his defense, but I don't think the O's are going to miss his offense much at all.

Alvarez really was never a huge platoon guy so i imagine he would still get the ABs. I guess you could do something crazy like putting Tejada at first base so you can still use him to back up the infielders in case of injury and keep Trumbo at DH and Mancini in Left.

Good point.  If things slide further I think you definitely yank him off the DL as soon as he qualifies and get him over the 3-month (or whatever it is) Rule 5 requirement so you can option him next year.  Option Rickard or DFA Hardy/Ubaldo.

Ol' Pedro is fairly adroit at catching the ball over there at third. He just needs to feed the ball off to J.J. and let him make the throws for him.

I highly doubt that, except in a blowout.

Alvarez played a grand total of two innings in the field after May last season. One was in a 12-2 game. The other was in a game where the O's had pinch-hit for two other third basemen and Pedro was the last guy on the bench.

I think the "Alvarez playing defense" ship has sailed. The Orioles know he can't field at any position.

I think our out-opportunity attribute means Pedro gets one here over Kim, who seems to be pigeonholed.  To the extent Alvarez is a qualified slugger waiting for an opening anywhere in the show, this is basically his perfect storm.

I'd still enjoy an Alvarez/Castillo platoon up near the top of the order, or in the 3-hole if Machado is fixed batting second.

He is part of it but it was the owner that made the Davis deal. 161 million for 2 or 3 maybe 4 years of service. Wish he had used that money for the team. Oh well.
