Connolly: Six Moves the Orioles Should Make

Thank you, Captain Obvious. (At least I don't get paid for my un-original suggestions.) The only recommendation I see on here that hasn't been a much-discussed option for a long time is signing Jon Jay, and while I kind of like Jay  I think that would be a bad idea, especially if Trumbo is still around to fill the DH spot most days.

Connolly prefaces his list by saying "If I were in charge [of the Orioles] for a day – OK, maybe it would take a week – I think I could make a few reasonably priced moves that could make this team better now and for the future." I wonder whether Dan Duquette feels the same way.

Oy, not a Connolly fan? Lol.  I think it's a ton better than the usual drivel thrown out by some of our other writers.  I don't love the idea of Cashner or any of the  SPs on the market, outside of Cobb/Darvish.  However, I am also intrigued by the idea of Jon Jay as a good OBP guy.

Not exciting pitching moves but well within what is realistic. I would love to see Trumbo traded but I just don't think there's a match anywhere. Would Chicago trade Shields for Trumbo? Would San Diego trade Headley for Trumbo? I doubt either one but the O's definitely aren't taking on a larger contract just to get rid of Trumbo.

Jon Jay would be an okay move...I would prefer Granderson or Gonzalez though.

1. Any moves at all

2. Repeat five more times

I agree with most of he says he would do. There is no way on Gods earth I'd bring back Tillman. I am so done with that man. And not sure about Jay for RF. As for DD he needs to poop or get off the pot. I am so ready for DD and Buck to be gone.

It would depend on what you'd get Gonzalez for.  With Hays, Mancini, Mullens, Stewart, and Santander, I'd want the RF acquisition to be on a 1 year deal.  A .374 OBP at the top of the order would be a change for the better.

Yea, I don't think I'd want either on anything more than a one year deal. Granderson would probably require at least two years and Gonzalez possibly one year if he wants to pull a Nelson Cruz.

In a perfect world Trumbo is traded and Mancini can go to DH. We could sign Granderson for a couple years and maybe see if some the OF prospects would be a starting point to get Duffy. What would be even better is if the wondrous alleged Cubs proposal is true and we could see an OF of Granderson, Almora, Jones.

Dan Connolly, in my opinion one of the better writers out there, with an interesting article about moves the Orioles could/should make. The first two: make a decision on Schoop and Machado - top my list as well.

Dan Connolly is a fine writer and a great person.

Yeah, always been one of my favorites.  I like Roch's wit and enjoy reading his stuff, but as far as reporting goes, Connolly usually is the best around here.

I don't doubt either of those things, but did this article advance the discussion in any way? I don't think it did.

And of course it avoided the real question: why aren't the Orioles doing any of these things, or anything else?  We know as much about Manny as we're ever likely to know, and I don't expect anyone with the Orioles to talk about a Trumbo trade, but where are they on the others? The idea that the Orioles should wait before fixing the rotation because a boatload (well, a small boat-load) of ML-ready talent might come over in a Manny trade stopped making sense a couple of weeks ago, if it ever did.

I agree. The article really served no purpose. It felt like it was written in November and recycled on a slow news days.

Extend Schoop - Sure

Trade Manny -  only if the O's get something good in return.  Don't trade him just to trade him.  The guys they get in return will always be known as the guys that were traded for Manny.   They better have some value to the O's.

Sign Cashner - Fine, do it.

Sign Tillman - Only if its a low base with incentives.   Giving him 5-10m is enough that the O's would have to pitch him every 5 day whether he is good or not.   We saw what that looked like last year.

Sign Jon Jay -  He made 8m as a part time player last year.  Too much for me.  Spend the money on starting pitching.

Trade Trumbo for pitching - Well, find if the O's can find a decent deal.  Which I doubt.

I agree with this.  Would be nice to know what was offered for Manny, heaven forbid the local media reported on that.

Just thought it was an interesting piece to read, nothing more.

    • I mean Adley’s attempted hit vs Witt is a good example. Adley hit it harder…but missed for a few feet. That happens. But even softly hit balls find green…the Os aren’t..others are…like Detroit..like KC vs us. They win on an IF hit, Westburg’s ball is a homer in 28 of 30 parks.
    • If they were going to get rid of Fuller they should have done it a month and a half ago. The issues with our hitting were apparent the whole second half of the season. Maybe a firing or two would have sent a message to the players prior to their postseason fizzle. .
    • What does Eflin and Jimenez signify? It was a very small addition to the payroll. John Angelos would have approved that, if he needed to approve anything at all.
    • I'm not sure that's quite it.  Well, more importantly, I'm not sure that's quite it for me. I absolutely want to win more in the playoffs.  At this point there's no question that for me I'd live through some lousy seasons if it guaranteed a World Series trophy.  I'd give up a lot for that. But unfortunately it's the weird paradox, especially in baseball, where the games that mean so much in terms of perception actually mean very little.   Just look at some the threads posted on this board in recent weeks. "Do the Orioles need more experience"?  (studies have shown this is not the case) "Maybe they need a certain type of hitter/approach!" (no, studies have shown that's not it either) "They must need to build their bullpen a certain way." (nope) "Well you have to be playing well in September to have a chance in October!"  (very much not true) "It must be those nice white boys need somebody to be a jerk" (OK, no real way to quantify that one :)) The Astros must have the secret sauce, they went to the ALCS a lot of times in a row!  Oh, they lost in the 1st round this year. Study after study after study shows that there is no pattern.  There is no "right" way to do it.  There's no way to predict from year to year which teams will or will not go on the run. If for that crazy 8-9th inning on the day after the season the Mets may not have even made the playoffs.  Now they're the example of guys that can "get it done". It's not an excuse, and frankly it's not really my opinion.  It's reality. I do 100% agree with your last 2 sentences.  I don't know what we've done to so displease the baseball gods.
    • It's definitely a possibility, but I wonder if there is actually something going on between Hyde and some players, would it be smart to bring his potential replacement in and subject him to the problem?    The fans, mostly here are the main source of BB being a manager. He's definitely had some MiL success so it's not unreasonable to assume he will be a manager someday.
    • I think this is spot on in every way.  But I think the fanbase is somewhat divided on how important playoff success is. Put another way, for you, me, and a lot of folks, the playoffs mean a ton.  41 years with no championship or even a pennant is a real long time, and the narrative of the Orioles since 1983 has gotten extremely old. Even the narrative of this winless recent edition of the Os has gotten old. For other fans, the regular season means much more and winning/losing in the playoffs doesn't carry much weight because of the nature of the tournament.   There is no right or wrong way to be a fan of a team. But I can say that if you told me the next 10 years would involve 9 seasons where we lose 90+ games and 1 season where we win the World Series, I will gladly sign up for that.  I am definitely at that point where that title means everything to me and yes 29 teams go home without the ring each year, but 1 team does get it and that needs to be us. And if we get "lucky" like the Tigers on the path there, then bring it on! If the playoffs are a crapshoot, I am tired of that crapshoot rewarding everyone else.
