A few thoughts as spring training starts to get serious

We’re getting to the serious part of spring training now, with Bundy going 5 innings today and good prospects like Mountcastle and Stewart being reassigned.    So, here’s a few thoughts:

1.   I like our options at catcher.    All four have performed pretty well.

2.   The Manny/Beckham thing seems to be going pretty well so far.

3.   Overall, the O’s have hit quite well.  112 runs in 19 games.   

4.   Santander has been a pleasant surprise on defense, and is hitting well too.

5.   I think we’ll see Gentry and Rasmus on the OD roster.   

6.   I’m really happy with how Harvey has looked.   

7.   Hays has pretty much blown his chance to jump to the majors.    I think he’ll get reassigned some time this week.

8.   Still waiting for the pitching to sort itself out.    We’ve now had nice starts from Gausman, Bundy and Cashner in their last outings.   We haven’t seen Tillman.    Wright’s been half decent, Cortes a bit disappointing, Castro’s just getting going.    I’d feel WAY better if we landed Cobb, but that’s still unlikely and now we’re at the point where he’d probably have to miss 3 starts before he’d be ready.  

9.    Like everyone else, I’m wondering if we can get anything positive from Davis and Trumbo.  Their injuries aren’t helping matters.   

10.    Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10, I’m right at 5 on the optimism meter.     Would go up to 7 if we landed Cobb.

Worst ST award might go to Rickard. Presley has botched a few balls in the outfield.

The utility infielders haven't been that good with the glove either.

Crossed my mind, too, that the Orioles' best offensive lineup may be the one with $35 Million sitting on the bench.

Santander has been great and I don't know how much we see of him with those guys in the lineup.

With Walker going to NY for $4 mill base plus incentives maybe we should consider Stephen Drew. left handed utility infielder.  Mostly  SS and 2B.

My three big takes on ST so far,

1.  Sisco is going to rake this year. Maybe leadoff by May. 

2. Harvey might be ready, but Castro has earned the first month.  We are going to be following Harvey real close. He’s added the cutter and needs to work on the change. 

3.  Santander isn’t an obligation. He’s one of our 5 best OF’s.

Our replacements for Trumbo and Davis, Alvarez, Valencia, Mancini, are better than Trumbo and Davis

The most positive thing I see from the spring is that we have good young players at C and OF.  Also Gordo is right.  I like the Valencia/Avarez platoon at DH more than Trumbo especially since Valencia can stitch together a few games at 3B, 1B and COF.  And Mancini can give you plenty of production at 1B.

The pitching staff... still hard for me to say.  Bundy pitched a lot better today, can't argue with that.

 

My optimism is more of a 3 right now -- still don't see a way the team gets any better than 3rd place in the Division and behind the 2nd Wild Card, be it Minnesota, LA or Texas.  With Cobb, I too would add 2 points to my attitude for a solid 5.

I’m in Florida now and will be at the games this weekend.   I’m feeling good about the recent outings of Gausman and Cashner, and I’m disappointed to be seeing Wright today instead of Bundy.    Tomorrow I assume I’ll get a first hand look at Tillman.   In any event, I’m looking forward to seeing some baseball!

I think both Engelb and Sardinas have looked much better than what we normally get. Excluding Janish.

Frobby....as for your #9, I think the injuries to Davis and Trumbo are actually helping the O's.  The team has performed pretty well despite them being MIA.
