I eat sushi in Baltimore all the time and I love it

I'm sure the sushi in Baltimore is great. I've been away for long enough that the idea seems a little incongruous. Just a little joke. ;)

No joke about the crabcakes out here, though. I'm still looking for a good one.

You won't find a good crabcake in Los Angeles. We used to have steamed crabs shipped out to school from home. It really freaked native Californians out watching us pull those things apart.

Good lord, that season he put up at Delmarva was RIDICULOUS. Absolutely laughable.

I thought that between Riley & Bedard we were on the path to dominance.

I also thought I'd like sushi.

Boy was I wrong.

Hmmm, speaking of ridiculous Delmarva seasons. How about the 1997 season 23 year old Ryan Minor put up that year, 307/373/545/918.

I wasn't in his camp, but there should be plenty saying, "Boy was I wrong!". 11 years later he's the batting coach back with the Delmarva Shorebirds club...

Curtis Goodwin and Alex Ochoa were going to be All-Stars in CF and RF respectively.

Ryan Minor and Calvin Pickering were going to be an AMAZING middle of the order.

Jeff Fiorentino was going to be a very good major leaguer.

Finally...

The Orioles were going to sign: Randy Johnson, Mo Vaughn, Vlad, Hideki Matsui, Carlos Lee, Carlos Beltran...

Boy was I wrong...

After 21 year old Calvin Pickering puts up an MVP (and almost won the Triple Crown) for Bowie of the Eastern League by hitting 309/425/566/991. You would have thought the Orioles would have given him the chance.

But no, they go out and sign an injury plagued aging 35 year old Will Clark to play 1st base in 1999. And to be true, an injury plagued 77 games later is what was produced by Clark in 1999. Just look at all those rings that brought them...

Somebody was saying, "Boy was I wrong! in the Orioles FO that year...

Something fun for the All-star break...

Be open and honest as to your surefire player/coach/manager/management views that have come back to prove you wrong.

Younger players are still, well... young, things can change, but again... as of today, who was your "Boy was I wrong!":p

Great thread!!

Going back a ways, thinking that the Orioles had made a terrific trade getting the power hitter they desperately needed. They traded prospects for a guy who made a living hitting HR's in the best pitchers park in the big leagues (at the time). A guy named Glenn Davis.....oops.

2. Ben McDonald. I remember his pitching a great game early in his first full year and thinking he can not miss... Missed.

3.Jeffrey Hammonds....I still do not believe he failed. He had everything. Except the ability to harness the tools.

4. Being thrilled that we finally had a local owner to run our team. I remember thinking that maybe we were returning to the days of local pride similar to the Hoffberger regime. Come to think of it #4 should have been #1.

There is a certain Publisher/Executive Managing Editor, that could confess to believing the O's were right to not trade Julio, and Matos for Beltran.

There are about 50 posters that should confess to believing that Vlad would not be productive during the length of a 5 or 6 year contract, or deserving of a 6 year $90M contract.

There are about 1,000 posters that should confess to believing that Flanagan and Beattie were competent, just because they were an improvement over Thrift.

Nearly everyone (myself included) should confess to believing that Mazzone's throwing program would help our staff……. Many posters could confess to thinking a Pitching Coach would significantly improve our ERA.

Numerous posters could confess to stating that Prince Fielder would not be a successful draft pick…

Numerous posters could confess it was an error on the Orioles part to annoit BJ Ryan as the closer in September 2004, helping to artifically inflate his value, and making it that much harder to extend him prior to the 2005 season.

:)

Posting on here, and running a team is just like playing baseball……. You are not going to bat 1.000….. Everyone makes mistakes… the 'game' is being consistently good, and just like on the field… using the information at hand at the time, to make the most informed posts you can, adjusting when necessary, and continuing to accumlate new knowledge.

Julio and Rodrigo, not Matos.

Yeah... Pickering, Hammonds, Goodwin, Minor... Grrrrrrr... the list is long of failed prospects that seemed pretty sure bets.

I was mad at the O's for drafting Markakis in 2003 over Milledge and Ian Stewart. I like those guys, but... boy was I wrong!

1. Benson for Julio/Maine was good - guilty

2. Ochoa, Goodwin and Benitez were our future - guilty

3. Jeffrey Hammonds and Ben McDonald were can't miss - guilty

4. Sidney Ponson - happily not guilty (I had him pegged since day 1)

5. Sosa - not guilty (corked bat + Reilly steroid incident convince me)

Not Guilty

Guilty, how could he not? In fairness, he was clearly good for Bedard.

Guilty 10 times over.

Great thread. Been wrong a lot, but one huge one was Luis Matos. I thought he was the second coming of Carlos Beltran. Boy was I wrong!"

I remember the debate between Steve Finley and Brady. I was 200% sure we traded the wrong guy in THE trade- in fact, I was livid. Then, to compound my man crush and "wrong-ness" I thought Harnisch might be ok, but Schilling would never be more than a sitch bullpen guy and was a toss in. Finley was the one we would be talking about in 15 years.

BOY WAS I WRONG!

    • Well I sort of disagree here. You said guys have been bad to questionable. I think that’s wrong. I just think a few guys have been awful and that has really hurt us. I would absolutely give Washington more time. Brade and Kane are well liked but doubtful they want to play them much right now. A trade should be considered if things don’t improve.
    • Yeah, I'd rather keep him over Soto.  I mean Soto can't start.  Yes Soto was dominant at times out of the bullpen but he was also gasoline on a fire out of the bullpen.  I would rather pay Suarez $4 or 5 million, knowing he can start or pitch in the bullpen than Soto, knowing he can only start and is liable to melt down when needed most.
    • It is funny how much Hays (the pre-2024 version anyway) matches the type of player they'll likely look for. I doubt that reunion happens though.
    • Weird thing about Suarez is that MASN had this being a 2 year deal when they talked about him back in April. ”The Orioles made another smart move with Suárez by signing him to a two-year contract in September. They knew what they’d ask from him and how it could contradict, and they didn’t want to give him any reasons to resist.” https://www.masnsports.com/blog/another-look-at-how-suarez-came-to-the-orioles
    • Dam the mosquito is in my Jelly. Please go away
    • Elias is refusing to spend money that Rubenstein has made available.  Do you have any sources?
    • Outside Hamilton, I can't really think of any areas or invidivuals outside the line that have really stepped up.  Humphrey and Stephens have played okay but it certainly hasn't offset the complete zeroes that Eddie Jackson and Marcus Williams have been.  I don't think you want to pull Hamilton off SS even though he can handle deep zone assignments fine, because he's essentially a linebacker that can cover wide receivers and there's too much value in that in the box.  And I think that Roquan/Simpson look lost in pass coverage because the safeties behind them are playing like butt.  Besides Roquan wasn't ever really a great coverage safety, he was kind of okay at it but he was never like a Lavonte David or Fred Warner there.   I'm starting to wonder if we need to either trade for a FS and/or start giving Ardarius Washington more snaps.  He certainly doesn't look worse than Jackson/Williams at this point in his limited playing time.  In general i think safety is an undervalued position so we're likely to get good value in trade.
