Tropicana Field goes cashless

I was wondering what people thought if Camden Yards went cashless? Not sure I like a total cashless stadium. So instead of passing money down the row ,you would now pass a hand held device.. Also looks like Tampa is closing the upper deck and going with a 25,000 to 26,000 seat stadium for most games.

I don't really carry cash all that often but taking away ones availability to pay in cash at all is going too far. Some people, a lot of older people, still deal in cash only and in addition when I go out I like to take a set amount of cash so I know what I'm spending. When I'm out of cash I'm done spending. Factor in issues with outages and I think they are going too far. Not a fan.

Given the 2019 Orioles' prospects for success they may well go fanless so it would be a moot point, right?

I remember when the Orioles dressed up a passel of 18 - 20 year old skinny women in short shorts and tank tops and had them approach every young man they could find to try to entice them into buying the equivalent of gift cards to purchase concessions. Great idea!: give the Orioles $100, they give you a pre-loaded debit card that only works at Oriole Park for the amount of the cash you just forked over. Now be sure not to lose that card!

That may be a nice gift to give to someone else, but there is no real value for an individual. Only risk of not getting your full money's worth.

Why are the Rays doing this?  What are the advantages for them?  Fewer mistakes on billing and counting cash.  None of the dealing with large amounts of cash before, after, during games - anything from keeping registers stocked to taking money back and forth to a bank, to limiting the risk of petty theft.  Also many people carry little/no cash, so mobile readers let them buy more stuff at the park.

The downsides?  Some people are cash-only.  Especially older people.  My parents... late 60s, early 70s, they've used their ATM card a handful of times ever, and have probably never used a debit card at a store.  Still write checks at the Food Lion, and (amazingly) still write checks to cash at the bank instead of using an ATM.  I guess they'd have to get with the program at the ballpark.

Personally I'm good with a cashless society.  Trip to Iceland in June the only time I got a few kroners out of the ATM was to use a pay toilet.  Everything else was paid with plastic, even at hot dog stands in the middle of nowhere.

The reason the Rays are doing this is because studies have shown that people spend more money when they aren't handing physical money back and forth, psychologically it doesn't feel the same as spending "real money". Casinos know this, which is why cash is converted into chips. There are also ancillary benefits of cutting down on mistakes and petty theft and increased efficiency/speed, but this is the main reason.

I am against it, even though I rarely cash at the ballpark because there are people who attend games that don't carry cards or who are simply unbanked.

So what about tips for beer vendors?  Like a restaurant you have to add on a tip?

I am all for technology but this is too far.

Just an indication on where society is heading. I do see the world going paperless currency.

Heck you can use your plastic at most vending machines now.

Yup,the wave of the future. Super Bowl will be cashless by 2025, if not sooner. Amazon and Walmart and Kroger's trying some cashless concepts. I am sure McDonald's has some plans with the mobile ordering app and the pick up curbside and the kiosks now in many stores to order without talking to someone.

You put the tip on the hand held device. I guess you might be able to gave a vendor cash but the article does not state that.

Yes.  The card reader will have an option to add a tip.  Now this may backfire - people might pay more in a cashless situation but I'd bet they tip less when they're not actually handing over cash in front of the whole row of people.

Im already using phone apps to pay for checks at places, like outback, texas roadhouse, you just put the tip on the card, or leave cash on the table.

Olive Garden has those little tablets at the tablesidde, that I like to use, it keeps my card in my own hand. Not that Ive ever had a problem.
