The service time situation with our outfielders

Guys we may see this year — prior service time and the date we could bring them up without incurring a full year of service time:

Yusniel Diaz: 0 days, April 12

DJ Stewart: 20 days, May 2

Austin Hays: 34 days, May 16

Anthony Santander: 1 year 46 days, May 28 (to be short of 2 years)

It will be interesting to see if any of these guys get called up, and when.

Hays is 34 +12 = 46 days

Santander is 46 + 12 = 58 days

I don't think service time is a concern for Stewart.

As to Hays and Santander, I’m not sure where you are getting the 12 days.    There are 186 days this season.    A player needs to be at 171 or lower to earn less than a full year of service.   So that’s 15 days the player must miss, plus previously accumulated time.

If the service time issue is addressed in the new CBA, this may only matter for super 2 status.

OK, I thought the standard season was 183 days but maybe that changed.   So if its 186 then 15 days.

It changed a bit when the union insisted on more off-days during the season.

Hyde said we'll see them in Baltimore sometime during the "summer".  So I really don't think anytime soon.  Maybe after trade deadline.

I am not verifying or contradicting any of the previously posted calculations, but the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) bases a player's service time on a 172 day year. That is, regardless of schedule, a player is credited with a full year of service for 172 days on the active roster. Any excess above 172 days within a championship season is omitted from the service time calculation. All days on the active roster up to and including the 172nd day are included in the service calculation.

Here's the reference from the current CBA:

ARTICLE XXI—Credited Major League Service
A. Definitions
(1) One full day of Major League service will be credited for
each day of the championship season a Player is on a Major League
Club’s Active List. A total of 172 days of Major League credited
service will constitute one full year of credited service. A Player
may not be credited with more than one year of credited service, 172
days, in one championship season (including any tie-breaker
games). Major League service will be computed commencing with
the date of the first regularly scheduled championship season game,
through and including the date of the last regularly scheduled
championship season game; provided, however, that one full day of
Major League service shall also be credited for any tiebreaker game
played following the conclusion of the last regularly scheduled
championship season game but before the commencement of postseason
play pursuant to Major League Rule 33(c) (subject to the
maximum of 172 service days in any season). This rule shall apply
uniformly to all Players and all Clubs notwithstanding differences in
a particular Club’s schedule.

All true but when playing the service time game the object to avoid getting to 172.  We want to be at 171 or less for players.   Therefore we have to account for the extra 15 days that are in a season.

Great post!!!  It sure would be nice to watch Hays and Diaz in June.

Can’t bring all 4 up. Diaz and Hays are the only two we’re likely playing this game with.

Stewart and Santander will have to be pretty lucky to ever see a big payday IMO. I don't think their service time is ever going to really matter.

I would not put Stewart and Santander in the same bucket.  Santander has a chance to be a big part of the O's next playoff team.   Stewart  will have trouble finding playing time in with Hays, Diaz, Santander, McKenna ahead of him in the future.

Im curious what they'll do with Mancini (and Rickard) when Hays, Diaz and possibly Santander eventually get called up. Trade? It wouldnt be shocking to have Rickard or Mancini have a strong year either, prolonging the situation.
