RCN is dropping MASN in Washington D.C. I could switch over to Fios (the only other option in DC), but I'm not sure its worth the hassle this year.

" Despite decreasing viewership, MASN (Mid-Atlantic Sports Network) is demanding forced carriage to those who chose not to subscribe to its programming. This leads to unfair increases to all customers not just those who watch and subscribe to MASN. We simply are unable to agree to the terms demanded by MASN and we will no longer carry MASN channel 372/687 (SD/HD) and MASN2 373/688 (SD/HD), effective July 1, 2019.

With more options than ever to stream live sports (MLB.TV, FS1, FOX, ESPN and others) customers have choices. Our goal is to offer the best services at reasonable and fair pricing for ALL of our customers – we’re on your side. For more info about MASN, visit us online at rcn.com/masn."

Sometimes it seems that facilitating people actually watching the games on a device is way down the list of reasons why these RSN's are set up to exist. The classic example is the 6 year ground war of attrition over (not) broadcasting Dodger games. The Dodgers (through their RSN) essentially get paid to not broadcast their games to most of their fans.

The Dodgers are about to start their sixth season off the air in the majority of Southern California homes. They have won the National League West for six consecutive years — for the first time in franchise history — and yet they remain blacked out among a significant part of their fan base.

The Dodgers own SportsNet LA. In exchange for a guaranteed $8.35 billion over 25 years, they granted Time Warner Cable exclusive marketing rights for the channel.

Neither TWC nor Charter Communications, which bought TWC three years ago, have been able to reach agreement with DirecTV or other local cable and satellite providers to air SportsNet LA.

The Astros were not on local cable in Houston for at least a year, but I think it may have been several years. It's pretty common for the cable companies and RSN's to play hardball during negotiations and sometimes it is a financial win for each if they part ways. Pretty much always a losing proposition for fans though.

Most people aren't fans though. They shouldn't have to pay huge fees for something they never watch.

Dodgers fans can watch 26 games a year due to being on broadcast tv and ESPN.  Orioles fans get one game on ESPN.

I think the Orioles are killing their brand.  Every move they make seems short sited..

RCN decided to drop MSN from their Washington DC cable package.  Only you could see that as an Orioles' "move."
