So we still can't trade with the Nationals? Hopefully Elias will be able to trade with them.  So who made it a law that we can't trade with the Nationals?

The Nationals had a scout at Camden Yards over the weekend and they also like Givens for a bullpen that’s in constant repair, but there are the obvious challenges in getting the two sides to work out a deal. That’s a hard one to consummate.

I'd be surprised if we traded with the Nationals until the MASN situation is resolved. And that could work both ways. Could be they were scouting the Rays.

Not if Elias has "total control".

If the sons won't let him trade a reliever to the Nats it's going to be a long rebuild.

If that’s the Orioles’ policy, then it’s just plain stupid.    Trade with whoever gives you the best deal.   Period.

I disagree, and his best, he is above average but nothing more, and he is rarely at his best. If there were a stat for “dumb move per game” I don’t think he’d lead the league(not while Beckham’s playing) but I bet he’d be in the top 5.

I don't know, it's not like Givens is super dependable out there. Risk of Villar gaffe vs Givens meltdown is about even. I don't think there will be a big market for either guy but I think they will both move.

Givens can bring back something.  Teams always need bullpen help and he striking out 12.8/9.  He's only making 2.15M and he's got two more years of team control.

Agreed. He probably won't command the orange-tinted top 50 prospect return that some expect, but he'll definitely net more than Cashner.

I thought Elias hat carte blanche? There's no way he's writing off trading with a team if he thinks it will help improve our situation in 2-3 years. The Nationals could use both Mancini and Givens. They could play Mancini primarily at 1B and cut Parra. Any chance that package would be enough to net Kieboom? Not that it really matters for this team, but he's young and MLB ready (but blocked).

Someone like Luis Garcia (SS) might interest Elias a bit more because he's younger (19). Last I checked he was ranked in the 60s on the top 100 prospect list.

So what does this mean , which he wrote earlier this morning? Is this cryptic code?

It just means the two sides are real keen to talk to each other, probably.

I love some of the young players in their system. I really hope we can find a fit. I imagine they might have some interest in Givens with Alvarez being out for quite awhile. I'm not sure about our other trade chips. They already have the DH spot clogged up with Garcia so that might rule out Mancini. They could definitely use some more pop in that lineup though. Outside of B.Lowe they really don't have a legit HR guy.

    • It was a terrible trade for sure, but I think they knew they weren't going to be able to afford DeCinces as a free agent. Either way, he needed to get out from under Brooks' shadow since he was his replacement.  Still, the thought of DeCinces next to Cal would have been nice. Imagine if they were able to afford Grich too. Free Agency killed the Orioles once it really got going, and then their drafting got pretty terrible too. The Orioles were in the playoffs 6 of 9 years from 1966 to 1973, winning two World Series. From 1977 (when free agency really kicked off), the Orioles made the playoffs in 4 of the next 34 years, winning one World Series in 1983.
    • @sportsfan8703 you have warmed me to the idea of Scherzer. However, given his age/injury risk and given that the move will be more of a salary dump that a cost of prospects, what do you think of adding another SP along with him to protect against the risk?  I know that we have Kremer coming back so that might need be necessary? But the age/injury concerns with Scherzer worry me.
    • It really is a great enhancement. I wish they would start doing this to old games and give us an archive. I know there are some on You Tube, but wouldn't it be great to be able to pull up any Orioles game from the past? I'd love to found an amazing game and go back and watch.
    • If we're talking one season, Zach Britton's 2016 season has to be on top. He was 47 for 47 in save opportunities. Of course that wasn't good enough to pitch in the most important game of the year, but that's for another thread!
    • I’m not sure anyone has much confidence in anyone. I hope we get someone good, and not just one, either.
    • The fact that this team is obliterating team and MLB records for home runs without a guy who very well could end up the best power hitter on the team at some point is pretty amazing.  Mayo might be the best prospect in this system. Really Holliday, Mayo and Basallo all could lay claim to the best prospect in the system.
    • The Fangraph rankings didn't have Liranzo and Almeyda either so are you using them as your "bible"? I mean, I'm not knocking them, but they are clearly going of draft status on some of these guys and not having Etzel on here when he's totally outplayed everyone else, including Bradfield, in his draft class so far is head scratcher. I'm not ready to say Etzel is a better prospect than Bradfield yet, but it's not out o the question. I think Bradfield has been working on a new approach and swing this year and that's why the production has been slow to come.  I still have high hopes for Bradfield and he's still an impact defensive outfielder.
