Is Santander part of the future?

Not really sure if he's a part of the future, but he should definitely be out there the rest of this season.

I'd love to see Santander, Hays and Stewart as the OF the rest of the way with Smith as the 4th guy and Wilkerson gone.

Smith over Wilkerson? No way. I'd take Wilkerson any day. He's better.

I'd rather not have either one, but Wilkerson does have more versatility. For whatever reason I just like Smith better, but stat wise they are pretty similar across the board.

Well, Smith can't play D, can't throw, average speed at best and can't hit well enough to offset all of that. Wilkerson can play D (CF at that), can throw, has above average speed and has been hitting .306 with an .889 OPS over the last two weeks. He can also pitch (sortof) in a blowout. Smith just isn't very good. He'd have to hit like Ortiz to offset his liabilities.

I'd rather not have either. Offensively and defensively they are both below replacement level, but Smith is definitely worse.

Willie Mays had an .828 as a rookie, and Bob Hamlin had a .987.  We'll see what things look like after Santander has 500 more PAs.

Willie Mays was 20 and Bob Hamelin was 26.  Santander is not a rookie and had OPS of .547 at age 23.  People sure like to throw out misleading stats on here.

Currently slashing .299/.351/.489 after last night.

I keep thinking he's going to come back to earth but he keeps putting together good at bats.  So could he be a starting outfielder for a good team or is he just a bench player?

It’s not just what he does, it’s what the guys around him do. I want someone who defends well. Whoever can defend as well as hit is ok in my book.

I think Hays is supposedly a good defender, Stewart is not, dunno about Diaz. I think Stewart is slow( faster than he looks but slow) but I don’t know enough about any of them, much less McKenna et al, to predict who our best 3 will be in two years.

But Santander is certainly one of our best three right now, and probably next year as well. Get rid of Broxton and Smith, move Trey to 1B, Wilkerson becomes new Ryan Flaherty Swiss Army knife guy( and maybe saves a roster spot by playing Inf and Of) and everyone is happy. You got two spaces for new guys and things play out over time.

so Yes...

I was going to say the same. Smith has a bad arm and the whole league knows it. I don’t know what Wilkerson’s problems are. Maybe he’s just a hair less good at everything, but he doesn’t have a glaring flaw like Smith. Smith has had his fun, has his pension and health care and $300,000 in the bank Send him on his merry way.

You could also just option him...

    • It was a terrible trade for sure, but I think they knew they weren't going to be able to afford DeCinces as a free agent. Either way, he needed to get out from under Brooks' shadow since he was his replacement.  Still, the thought of DeCinces next to Cal would have been nice. Imagine if they were able to afford Grich too. Free Agency killed the Orioles once it really got going, and then their drafting got pretty terrible too. The Orioles were in the playoffs 6 of 9 years from 1966 to 1973, winning two World Series. From 1977 (when free agency really kicked off), the Orioles made the playoffs in 4 of the next 34 years, winning one World Series in 1983.
    • @sportsfan8703 you have warmed me to the idea of Scherzer. However, given his age/injury risk and given that the move will be more of a salary dump that a cost of prospects, what do you think of adding another SP along with him to protect against the risk?  I know that we have Kremer coming back so that might need be necessary? But the age/injury concerns with Scherzer worry me.
    • It really is a great enhancement. I wish they would start doing this to old games and give us an archive. I know there are some on You Tube, but wouldn't it be great to be able to pull up any Orioles game from the past? I'd love to found an amazing game and go back and watch.
    • If we're talking one season, Zach Britton's 2016 season has to be on top. He was 47 for 47 in save opportunities. Of course that wasn't good enough to pitch in the most important game of the year, but that's for another thread!
    • I’m not sure anyone has much confidence in anyone. I hope we get someone good, and not just one, either.
    • The fact that this team is obliterating team and MLB records for home runs without a guy who very well could end up the best power hitter on the team at some point is pretty amazing.  Mayo might be the best prospect in this system. Really Holliday, Mayo and Basallo all could lay claim to the best prospect in the system.
    • The Fangraph rankings didn't have Liranzo and Almeyda either so are you using them as your "bible"? I mean, I'm not knocking them, but they are clearly going of draft status on some of these guys and not having Etzel on here when he's totally outplayed everyone else, including Bradfield, in his draft class so far is head scratcher. I'm not ready to say Etzel is a better prospect than Bradfield yet, but it's not out o the question. I think Bradfield has been working on a new approach and swing this year and that's why the production has been slow to come.  I still have high hopes for Bradfield and he's still an impact defensive outfielder.
