Not to derail...but, I'm going to derail...how is "ph" the correct way if in shortening it, you have to change it to a "v"? Wouldn't the correct way be the way that allows the shortening of the name to just be dropping a single letter? It appears to me, the "ph" option just makes it too complicated. Besides, shouldn't the "ph" produce a similar sound to "f" which would make Stephen and Steven, phonetically, different names?

Stephen is the historic spelling, dating back to St. Stephen in the Bible.

As for the nickname, why is Jack a nickname for John?  Dick for Richard?   You can't make sense out of nickname spellings, don't even try.

Stephanos from the Greek Στεφανος. Weird stuff happens when you translate Greek to Latin to an older form of English then into modern English. There have been a number of major shifts in how English is pronounced along that journey (e.g., our weird pronunciation of "y" when compared to romance and other languages that were heavily influenced by Latin). I love the history of the English language podcast. Fun stuff.

I don't quite understand pulling tate up in a series where you need fresh arms and not pitching him at all.

He was called out to the west coast on Friday, so he probably wasn't going to pitch then.

Saturday and Sunday were both high leverage games that Hyde wanted to win. I guess he would have gone in if yesterday went extra innings.

There's that and also why any grown man would willingly agree to be called "Dick."  :leaving:?

"Hey, Dick, what's up? "  "How's it hanging, Dick?"  "Hey Dick, come here, now."

When I was in Garden Street School (1970-1976), there was a janitor whose name was "Dick Head."

No joke.

Not only that, but that is what was on his nameplate on the janitor's door (Mr. Dick Head) ........ but his nameplate was hung upside down. The other 5 janitors had their nameplates displayed right-side up. I suspect that his was intentionally hung upside down to try to dissuade us kids from putting 2 and 2 together and seeing what it said (It was an elementary school for Kindergarten through 5th grade.)

A few years later, when my friends and I went bowling at the Brewster Barn Lanes, his name came up again ........ this time his name was displayed right-side up on a board that was hanging from the center of the building, and it was for being as one of the bowlers on the championship team that season.

I'm not getting my hopes up.  But I'd have rather given him the start tonight instead of Hess that's for damn sure.

If they think he’s going to be a reliever then that’s what he should be doing.

How come everyone gets initials except Luis “F.U.” Figueroa? Seems like it’d fit with the Richard Head story at least.

    • Are there any other qualifications other than signing a contract for 50+M?  A contract of that value spread over 3-4 years would give him a raise and make other teams give some consideration to sign him.  I think that's the only way a QO would work for him.  But I don't think they put him in jeopardy - altho the Orioles could match an offer, I suppose.  I think they value him pretty highly even if he won't command top money.
    • I did say "unlikely" before "no matter what." Now that I re-read that though, it's kind of a bizarre sentence so I can see why you interpreted it that way. Of course there's a shot a player taken at 1-22 succeeds. Elias is certainly above average at drafting, possibly well above average, but the odds are still against him here, as they are for pretty much any individual pick he makes. I'm not trying to knock Elias here, just stating the fact that the vast majority of players selected in the back of the first round don't turn into solid regulars and so you shouldn't pass up someone you think is more likely to succeed here to draft "for need." I'm certain someone who will be available at this pick will have an incredible major league career. The odds are against it being whoever we draft though. That's just math.
    • I used to think we had a plethora of outfielders ready to replace the current guys, but not I'm not sure. Cowser is one. Does the FO trust Stowers? Heston is another as far as his bat goes, but how bad is the defense if you have Stowers, Cowser and Heston? How long before Bradfield is ready? Will Norby or Mayo move to the OF? Does that make it any better. If Santander has his typical year, I would give him the QO. So what if you have to pay him large for one year? It's not like our payroll is high right now.
    • Or maybe he just is hesitant because he knows it’s best to give up a single than letting it get by you for a triple or inside the park homerun. I highly doubt Cowser gives a crap about WAR. There is nothing in the guy’s demeanor, personality, or anything that suggests he chases stats and places himself above the team. To say otherwise is quite ridiculous at best, and malicious at worst. He is a rookie and he will get more comfortable as he plays. With that comfortability will come trusting his ability more and more. Why even suggest a thing like you are suggesting? Just pathetic quite frankly on your part.
    • On the spot?  Maybe.   Even at full health, people would have accepted not winning the division because of the pace the Yankees are on.   We have a comfortable lead for the WC so if the Orioles can continue winning at a reasonable pace with Burnes/GRod/Kremer/Irvin/Povich/Suarez.   As far as the playoffs go, there’s only a few starters that inspire confidence in a playoff series that will be available.   Elias isn’t trading Holliday, Basallo, or Mayo.  He just isn’t.   He can get relievers without giving up top prospects.  The question is, can he get someone like Crochet without giving up those top 3?   Crochet, despite innings concerns, gives you a playoff starter plus someone who’ll be here after Burnes is gone. However, Crochet is an A.J. Preller type of move, not an Elias type of move.   If Povich looks the part of a ML starter AND no more starters go down, I could see Elias standing pat on the starters and fortifying the back end of the bullpen.
    • If a team that loses a qualifying free agent does not receive revenue sharing and did exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, it is awarded a compensatory pick after the fourth round. San Diego Padres Compensation for Josh Hader. The Astros forfeited their second-round pick for signing Hader. San Diego Padres Compensation for Blake Snell. The Giants forfeited their third-round pick for signing Snell. Toronto Blue Jays Compensation for Matt Chapman. The Giants forfeited their second-round pick for signing Chapman.
    • If a team that loses a qualifying free agent does not receive revenue sharing and did not exceed the luxury-tax salary threshold the previous season, it is awarded a compensatory pick after Competitive Balance Round B.   Los Angeles Angels Compensation for Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers forfeited their second- and fifth-round picks for signing Ohtani.
