It seems to me that there are a lot of people who plan their retirement destination more on minimizing taxes than on where they'd actually enjoy living.  Maybe if I were in different circumstances with more of a worry about my retirement income I'd be more like that, but as it stands state tax rates have approximately zero bearing on what I'm going to do when I retire.  I fail to understand how a few hundred dollars a month would make anyone move to Tennessee and live a 10 hour drive from all your family and friends.

Doesn’t Florida have similar tax savings?  And if a person situation requires them to live cheaply as possible I can see moving to Nashville.  But  I wouldn’t call it a best place to retire. To me I would consider weather, food, healthy activities for seniors, good public transport, low crime etc. when making such a list.

High on my list is not being in a big, flat, intolerably hot place where the median age is 77.  I will not live in Del Boca Vista.

Though I like Nashville the food is pretty much terrible there and life expectancy is not good there and the weather is terrible. Nice place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there.  I think the cheapness is the one factor going for it and better than living in other very cheap places.

Isn't the weather in Nashville roughly the same as Maryland, but maybe without as much oppressive 90 degree heat/humidity?  I guess I could be wrong.  I'm not the biggest fan of Maryland summers but the rest of the year is okay.

But my perfect climate is more along the lines of Toronto or Denver or something.

LOL  nor I, and I thought I'd never retire to FL (or OH).  But 6 months of the year we found a tolerable, sometimes delicious temperature in flat FL surrounded by horse country an hour from the ocean with active adults (500 softball teams with Jose and Ozzie visiting once a year to play against travel squad locals, the most golf holes in the world, pelotons of bikers daily traversing the 100 miles of trails and roads, lap pools, water volleyball, platform tennis, even sand volleyball with decent 60 year olds, 3 different squares of nightly entertainment (no Guy Lombardo-esque bands), etc.).  5 months in relatively cool, culturally-deprived farm country on a lake in OH complements the active side of life with golf, biking auto-free back roads, access to Canada and points west.  It's not for everyone but not half bad.  But, I hear what you are saying!  For the wives, it's all about the grand kids though.

Nashville is hotter and is humid.  I wouldn't put Baltimore on a list of top places to retire.

    • You’ve got to think that the minor leaguers are well aware of it when the boss is there to watch them play, right?
    • Before I begin, I have to say I have really enjoyed watching Mullins over the past few years. However, his body language when going to the plate now is really poor.  Two thoughts: 1) Is it time for him to at least try switch hitting again. Could it possibly get worse? Just a different look for a bit. 2) I know D is important. But, how many above average, game changing plays does a CF'er (or any fielder) make per game? Yet, for the most part, every starter gets 4 AB's/game where he can make a difference. Is having a good D, no hit player a net gain? Or is a average D, hit player a net gain?
    • Thats all there using Mcann for is backup catcher 17 starts all at catcher, Mayo does not play catcher.
    • Suarez’ velo makes me think he is an IL candidate when Grayson is activated, if there’s some nagging injury that is contributing to it.  I think it’s very unlikely Akin is optioned and Baumann has pitched better of late, so good chance somebody is going to the IL.
    • As to Urias, I think he’s on much thinner ice.  I’d say he has another 30 days to get his bat in gear.  If he doesn’t, I think either Holliday or Mayo will take his spot.
    • I don’t see a path for Mayo to get the ABs needed to acclimate & become a force in the lineup this year.  Someone would need to be moved.  I don’t see them bringing him up to get sporadic ABs and if they do bring him up and give him sporadic ABs I don’t see him being a difference maker.  He’s a special talent but every single one of our top tier guys have needed time to adjust.  How does he get that opportunity?
    • Offensively, l think McCann is what he is.  If you look at his 2023 game log, you’ll see that he was sub-.600 OPS most of last year, except that he had a 10-game stretch in August where he got very hot and raised his OPS from .564 to .692, and then he had a .525 OPS for the rest of the season once that streak was over.  So, I’m not expecting much more from McCann with the bat than what we’re currently seeing.  Every so often that stiff, grooved swing of his connects with a baseball and he hits the ball hard somewhere.   Most of the time, it doesn’t.   Defensively, there are some indicators that his performance is down, particularly in pitch blocking.  But it’s a small enough sample that I don’t know if it’s really meaningful.   The team is 11-6 when McCann starts and the pitchers have a 3.78 ERA when he’s behind the dish (2.90 when it’s Adley).   I think that’s good enough that the team isn’t going to be in any big hurry to “upgrade” from McCann.   He’s been a good mentor for Adley and seems well liked and respected in the clubhouse.   So long as they’re winning when he catches, they’re going to stick with him IMO.
