"They're going to have to do this slowly, methodically, much like the Cubs did," Kurkjian said. "... There are no more quick fixes in baseball, not anymore, not when you've gone to the extent that the Orioles have."

Throughout the next several years, especially next season, Kurkjian doesn't see the Orioles improving much, considering the team is entering is still deep in the throes of a rebuild.

"I don't think they're going to look like a significantly better team going into next year," Kurkjian said. "It's going to be subtle changes. It's going to be Rule 5 guys. It's going to be minor-league free agents and it's going to be that major-league guy who they're going to take a chance on and hope it works out."

The Orioles finished 2019 with a 54-108 record, a seven-game improvement from 2018 but a second straight season with 105 or more losses.

Or even 108 losses.

The Information Age might end up hurting the Orioles [because] they're not gonna be able to sneak one by somebody else because everyone else knows everyone's information," Kurkjian said.

Especially the Cardinals.

Give the guy a raise.  That is...

I don't know what I will be watching yet.  Depends on who is traded and who is added.  Even if they are not big adds.

At the major league level my priorities are:

Hays

Mountcastle (when he’s added)

Means - was he a fluke?

Akin (when he’s added)

Kremer (if he’s added)

Harvey

Mancini - fun to watch hit, if he’s here.

I’m expecting only minimal improvement in 2020, but ‘21 could get interesting.   This year, I’ll mostly be watching for how the guys slated to be long term pieces are doing, whether in the majors or the minors.

Improvement in 2020 might be a tough thing to define. I could see them having a worse record next year, especially if they trade Villar/Givens/Mancini. But if Hays and Mountcastle can establish themselves, I'd define that as improvement even if the entire club doesn't perform as well.

I think this is accurate.  Not expecting any big pickups or drastic moves.  I think the roster will really look like last years.

It's going to be a season to really see some of the top prospects step up.  IMO, it's about Mountcastle and some of the arms.  Curious to see who the 2020 Means/Alberto will be, if anyone.
