He purposefully slimmed down, he says, in an effort to carry less weight on his aging body. Do I believe him? It doesn't really matter either way. I know what you're getting at, but I think dealing in speculation is kind of silly. At least while we have an actual answer for the time being.

I think he works out about as much as I do.  Why should he? Give me one reason why he has any motivation whatsoever to go to the daggone gym every day?

His take:  He was working on getting lighter/more flexible.

My take:  He didn't want to put in the work.

I agree. I think he was involved in more important things in his life.  Gym for 10 hours a day no longer worked.

Somehow, many other players who sign long term contracts manage to remain motivated.

For the record, I am not getting at a PED angle.  It's just funny to hear him say... oh yeah, I'm gonna try doing the weight lifting thing again, lol

Yeah maybe.  Ever since he got the idea I never had the impression there was a plan, or work ethic to execute it.  That's a view from 50,000 feet but it's pretty damning when you implicate your batting coach in a lie and he doesn't cover for you.

Look the PED angle is totally in play here.  Even if you aren't hinting at HGH and Steroids.  Davis was on Aderall, and don't forget that MLB banned chewing tobacco.  Davis would double barrell the chaw.  So he was going up to the plate all jazzed up on Aderall(basically speed), and a big nicotine buzz from the chewing tobacco.

No wonder he looks a little lethargic and indecisive.  He's going up to the plate with a completely different brain chemistry.

Evidently I did forget this.  When did they ban it for players like Davis?

In 2015 (Davis’ last really good year) he was on a TUE for Vyvanse, not Adderall, and so far as I know he still has that exemption.

Thank you. The Adderall thing is the thing Orioles fans love to get wrong the most, and they cite it incorrectly constantly.

Although many long term deals are not good for teams as it relates to value provided. As to whether the decline in performance of those mega long term deal players relates to their motivation is impossible to measure as no player readily acknowledges they are less motivated after becoming financially wealthy beyond their wildest dreams.   But it is there nonetheless.  Davis is just a bit easier to come to that conclusion given his behavior eschewing change or attempts for improvements.

    • Yes my mistake I thought those were eligible. They may be eligible after winter meetings. Manfred seems to like the idea of making more picks available for trade.
    • I always compare where we are in attendance to payroll. As it stands our attendance will be 19th in the league and payroll 22nd. The Twins are at 19th with 130 million dollar payroll which is 22 million higher than ours. I expect the Nats and Tigers to spend a little this offseason so that 130 million mark for 19th place may move closer to 140. Still gives this team 50-60 million to spend on either resigning guys or free agents.
    • Well, the changes to the flex plans this year led both me ($1200 plan) and my friend ($2500 plan) to not renew for next year. The decision to more severely limit playoff presale access and dramatically reduce the discount on food and drinks at the park just didn’t make it worth it to tie up that much money in advance. So, we’ll likely go to far fewer games next year. Given the press reports and online reaction, I have to think we weren’t alone in our decision making.
    • Rivera and Soto are hitting.   Holliday and Mayo are not.
    • Holliday could fill the role of pinch runner that Mateo would fill.
    • Yeah. I don’t get that either. SEA would win head to head tie with HOU and push HOU into WC race but it’s irrelevant if the loses don’t match.
    • Regardless of how down I've been about their recent play, there's always been some hope. Getting some guys back in time for the post season will definitely help.    The way this team has been built requires a group effort. I mean,  Gunnar is a huge star, but the lineup when healthy can be competitive top to bottom. I'm not knocking NY here, but if you can eliminate Judge(almost impossible), you stand a chance vs them. I'm not implying that they will go on a deep run because we've seen how bad it can be, but simply saying that getting healthy and having a shot is the best we as fans could have hoped for with the way this season has gone.
