He went from a fingernail injury on his left hand to a broken bone in his right wrist...

That...Seems strange.

So sad. I like Richie Martin and I was rooting for him. We don’t have any really good players on this team, but we have a lot of “feel good” guys that you really want to see do well.

He had one of the two best defensive players last season, when he lunged to his left for a grounder, the grounder took a sudden hop to the right and he caught himself, spun in the other direction, got to the ball and nailed the runner. What a great play that was! And it wasn’t his only one either. I guess we’re not going to see him this season…

Apparently he felt the pain in the right hand yesterday when he tried to play catch.

So he dove headfirst into first base, collided with the re-bulked up Chris Davis, and injured both hands.

I had a minor wrist fracture 4 or 5 years ago.  About the most minor you can have, a non-displaced fracture (the end of the bone had a crack in it, as opposed to a displaced fracture where a bone is broken clean through).  I was in a small amount of pain bit I couldn't pick up anything heavier than a pencil.  I couldn't turn a doorknob with that hand.  I certainly would have noticed it long before trying to play catch the next day.  I did wait four hours before driving myself one handed to the hospital so I could watch Frank Beamer's last ever game, and it wasn't that painful just sitting there, more "discomfort" than pain.  But I couldn't use the hand for anything.  And that was supposedly about as minor a fractured wrist as one could have.  Perhaps a less important bone would have been different (mine was the radius).

I thought so too.

Yeah, it does sound weird. I would assume he has both injuries. At first they could only tell that he had some kind of fingernail injury probably because they could actually SEE that one. Maybe his wrist was a little sore at the time, but they obviously didn't do an x-ray right there on the field.

I remember I broke my wrist in college and thought it was just a sprain. I didn't go to the doctor for about a week. Eventually I went in and had to have emergency surgery lol. I had no idea it was broken.

Hopefully he has a speedy recovery, but a wrist injury is no bueno. Takes time to heal, then rehab. Then you can try to play again. Might not be enough time for him this year.

Sounds like it's the Redskins doctors diagnosing this versus the Peter Angelos specialists.  Maybe that's how we are cutting costs now.

He won't play again this year. You are right.

That’s a shame. I didn’t necessarily expect big things from him but it’s have been cool to see him play alongside Iglesias. That’d have been some nice infield defense with Ruiz at third and Davis at first.

Those four guys combined for -14 defensive runs saved last season.  Maybe Martin would fit better at 2B but it’s still a below-average defensive infield at best.

Especially on his throwing hand.

    • So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???
    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
    • How much different? They sat Judge yesterday, they threw their playoff starters for 5+ innings yesterday and today. They are also playing for the best record in the AL. They aren't mailing it in.
    • It’s not just the O’s. I’ve checked the Dodgers who have similar prices and they have a lot of upper deck NLDS games 2 & 3 available. Same for the NLCS. yanks still have seats available also. — In general, I’m sure alot of fans are just gonna wait till the day of to grab tickets.
    • That makes no sense. If they had to win their current series would have looked much different.
