We don't know that.  We just know that when he was first promoted he went several days without pitching and then only came in in a mopup situation.  There was speculation on here that Hyde "didn't want" to use him in a high leverage situations.  But that was assumption based on his usage.  I don't think there was ever a quote of Hyde's to that affect.

I think he said 1-2 things but I always take that stuff with a grain of salt.

From August 28:

“For us right now, Keegan fits in our bullpen the best,” Hyde said today in his Zoom conference call with the media.

“I might not even use him as a long guy. I might use him as a one-inning guy here, too. But I think that long-term, is he a rotation piece? Is he a long guy? I think that’s something we will find out. But at this moment right now I’m going to try to win games and utilize Keegan the best way we can.”

Three days later, Akin started a game.    Of course, Tommy Milone had been traded in the interim

John Parrish, Dave Ford, and Sammy Stewart all Kd a bunch in their debut games, I believe.

For any rookie?  No idea but I'll bet someone like Moose or Palmer or McNally hit double digits as a rookie.

Mussina struck out 10 in his 3rd major league game.  Not sure if that’s our record.

Nope.   I just figured out that Mike Boddicker struck out 12 in 1983.   He was still a rookie though he’d also gotten into games in 1980, 1981 and 1982.

There could be someone who topped Boddicker, but I’m not going to spend any more time looking.

Well I said I wasn’t sure I remembered correctly, and I know he bounced up-down-back up with only a coup relief innings to show for it, but I thought Hyde said he’d be used in relief.

regardless, I’m glad he’s where he is.

At one point, Akin retired 11 consecutive batters before Austin Riley reached on an infield single in the 5th inning.

At one point, Akin threw 14 consecutive Strikes.

Not a single Braves base-runner went beyond 2nd base while Akin was in the game.

I wonder what Freeman's total time base to base was on that trip around - he only passed jog on the 2nd to 3rd bit.

Skimmed Bedard's game log for rookie peaks and he maxed out at 10.

Iglesias capitalizes on the Tomlin BP routine to get to 48-for-126 on the year.

Ben just dropped a wonderful tidbit I never knew that he and Albert Belle were LSU teammates.

    • I see a playoff team with maybe the same expectations the 2023 team had going into the season. Possibly being picked to finish between 2nd and 4th in our division.     SP - Eflin, Grayson, Big Al, Kremer, Povich McDermott in AAA. Bradish and Means back in the 2nd half????  Wells too? RP - Bautista, Cano, Dominguez, Soto, Coloumbe, Webb, Perez, Akin 1B - Mountcastle DH - O’Hearn 2B - Holliday 3B - Westburg SS - Gunnar C - Adley LF - Cowser CF - Mullins RF - Kjerstad Bench - Mateo, Urias, backup C, RH OF or Mayo Basallo up mid season This is us baby.  We are who we are.  The only way to get experience is to actually get experience. Sorry to Brad Fuller maybe our “vet” can be a former player as hitting coach.  Carlos Beltran or Bonds.
    • I would love to sign any hitters who have actually experienced postseason success and wins.....maybe even championships.  Gurriel for KC has been a part of a lot of postseason wins and having veterans on the team like that are valuable.  I saw somewhere the KC guys said they really benefitted from having Gurriel, Pham, Sal Perez, and others who have been there and done that.  Continuing to rely on young players with nothing but zeroes on their postseason resumes isn't helpful.   I heard Francona is going to manage the Reds.  Great move for them.  I would have loved to have him, given he is a Hall of Famer with actual WS championships and a ton of October success.
    • Geordie Greep just dropped The New Sound. So that.
    • Crazy to lose to the same city in all three sports with two to be considered monumental upsets. I believe the Knicks were actually favored against the Bullets, but not sure as it was before I was born.
    • That entire series very much hurt. Benitez was awful. He hung a slider to Grissom (the eventual ALCS MVP) allowing a go-ahead homer in the top of the 8th of game 2. The squeeze play you mentioned that I haven't been convinced wasn't foul in game 3. Game 4 had two of their guys score on the same wild pitch where it looked like David Justice blocked Lenny Webster after scoring the first of those two runs. And then of course, the last hanging slider from Armando to Tony Fernandez that proved to be the game winner in game 6. Just painful all around.
    • More attendance than the playoff games.
    • Just Burnes and Soto for me. That’s all. 🤪
