Yeah but also School gives away a lot of ABs by having little plate discipline. So when teams are trying to make the playoffs like the Twins this year, and the Brewers the year before, playoff teams need guys that will consistently give you good ABs. Schoop isn’t that guy.

He is what he is, at this point.  He’s been having an utterly typical Schoop season, with both his good features and his flaws.

Going with the new ball was a genius move by the owners. It essentially brought the steroid era back. Pitchers are inherently more risky to give millions to than position players.  Position players are in the lineup everyday. It had to burn owners up to see RP getting $15-20 million a year. 

You’re not going to see the Jason Vargas type SP signing 3/30 contracts anymore. You better miss bats in today’s game.

I think the change to major league balls in AAA strengthens the case not to have pitchers skip AAA entirely.   It’s tough to adjust to the highest level of competition and learn the nuances of throwing a different ball simultaneously.    It make sense to let a pitcher adjust to the ball in AAA before exposing him to major league hitters.

Schoop would be the type of stop gap that I’d like to root for next year on a 100 loss team. As long as he’s healthy I think he’d hit 25-30 HRs playing either 2B, or 3B, next year. But we’re probably looking more like the Jace Peterson/Rio Ruiz type.

Jones hasn’t been starting much either.   Maybe once in the past 5 games or so.  Wonder how they both do for contracts next year.

Why are there different balls at different levels? Is it to save money? Why doesn't all affiliated teams use the same ball?

For those of you wondering about Keon Broxton, or not. With the Mariners ,he is batting .156 with  a .206 on base percentage. But his strikeouts are only 19 in .32 AB's. For the year now  batting  ..179 with 90 K's in 184 AB's.

Not many players have more homers then walks in a season, Schoop has only had one season with more walks then homers. For his career, he has 126 homers and 113 BB's.

Jones is having a similar season to last year. .OBP, SLG and .OPS  are a few points higher this year. But looks like towards the tail end of his career. Fourth outfielder next year?

It makes it just the same.  They just have to digest the fact that Norfolk is now a five runs per game environment instead of 3.5.

The run environment doesn't change anything as far as player value goes.  An average pitcher is an average pitcher, and a replacement-level pitcher is a replacement level pitcher.  Whether there are four runs and one homer a game, or five-and-a-half and one-and-a-half.

Probably a vestigial artifact of the long-gone era when minor leagues had some degree of independence and autonomy.
