Yes.  OPS now .871.   I’m expecting @Can_of_corn to start a fan club any day now.

I think there's a little helium in Grenier's numbers right now.  His batting average on balls in play this season is .432, compared to .355 last year, which lines up with his increase in batting average from .244 to .315.   He has had some improvement in isolated power (.140 last season to .162 this season) and in K/AB (35.8 percent last season, 31.5% this season) but his K/BB has slipped a bit (from 2.34 last season to 2.69 this season).   

I haven't seen him play, but the numbers suggest that he's made some improvement at the plate, but not as much as the headline stats indicate.

The more I watch of Grenier this year the more I like him. Defensively, he's the most consistent SS in the system with plenty of arm to stay there. 

In his last 15 games he's absolutely killing it at the plate slashing .466/.523/.759/1.282 in 65 PAs with 3 HR, 6 2B, and a triple. Now clearly he's not going to keep hitting like this, but if he can prove over this season his bat is legitimate, he quickly will shoot up the prospect rankings because he's a legitimate major league defensive SS.

Cadyn Greiner's home run was a no-doubter off the bat. He crushed it to right-center, probably went at least 400 feet. He had an error in the first where a bouncer he ranged to his right for went off his glove. Not the easiest play, but one a good shortstop needs to make. After that he put on a defensive clinic. He had about three highlight reel plays, two of which were tough ground balls he fielded and flipped to second to try and start a double play. Runners were barely safe at first both times. Cullen's throws from second weren't the greatest, but it might not have mattered. The Akron fans near me were very impressed with Greiner's D and one turned to me and asked if he always played like that. If the newfound ability to hit is real, he could be something special.

Has a .558 OPS through 34 PA's in July to lower his season OPS to .724. Not exactly what you want to see from a 24 year old in AA. Im thinking when Ortiz comes back from his injury he should get the bulk of the work at SS. Grenier's bat just isnt heating up.

He had a nice month or so. Ortiz is out for the rest of the season with left shoulder surgery. Grenier may be a little dinged up right now.

Ortiz is out for the year. Torn labrum. 
 

Sounds like Grenier’s glove could make him a utility player. Can’t be worse than Valaika and Wilkerson and Franco.

Ortiz is out for the year so it will be next spring.

I think there will be a  lot of promotions on July 19th.   I could see Westburg promoted to SS at Bowie and Grenier playing at 2B with both Ortiz and Vavra out.

Vavra will be back soon. I agree that it may be interesting to see who is promoted in the next few weeks. Not sure they move Westburg this soon. I think Grenier is the best defensive SS in the system. Playing him there over Ortiz for the majority of games tells me the staff feels the same.

I respect Grenier's defense but he has to hit also.  If he is not hitting enough to get a promotion then they can just shift him to 2B.    Varva is due back in mid August.  That is a month and 5 days away.  Lot of injuries can happen in the amount of time.   Who knows where players will be.

Westburg has 121 at bats at Aberdeen.  In 6 more games he should have 140 at bats.   Elias has been moving players with even less than that.  Westburg was the 30th player selected in the draft.  He could move fast if he is hitting.   I think he may be one productive week away from Bowie.

I dont know if am 802 OPS in A+ screams promotion to me. That would be an aggressive move. Next season its possible he starts in AA.

      The O's would have Crochet thru 2026.  They could also give him the Gray Rod rest treatment and then pitch him out of the pen until September.

      I mean this take is fairly reasonable and I sympathize with your frustration in this discussion. He's not putting up superhuman numbers. He's putting up good numbers that are trending up, and factoring in his age and position, it's pretty exciting. But like Frobby said, he's not untouchable, it's just that it seems unlikely there's a trade fit for him because it would cost the other team someone equally as exciting, with years of control, and who is ML ready. Those guys just don't exist much on the trade market.

      I hear you but everything seems kind of moot if Crochet and his agent want him on an innings limit. Even if they don't, I doubt Elias would throw caution to the wind like that and abuse the guy's arm. So it seems unlikely Elias would give the White Sox SP-level prospects for a guy they'd be forced to use in the bullpen.

      I'm thinking there is a good chance Elias makes a strong play for Crochet.  Hear me out before I get drowned out in a chorus of boos.  It seems that Westburg, Mayo, and Holliday can not co exist on the same team.  Too many bodies not enough positions.  That's not even accounting for Basallo (is he more of a 1B/DH) and Kjerstad (same).  Imo, it's better to solve the backlog of prospects before it becomes obvious and the O's hand is forced and the O's have to accept supoptimal value.  There's this little problem of the O's very obvious lack of pitching depth.  O's #1 is Burnes, #2 is Gray Rod, #3 is ??, #4 is ??, #5 is ??.  Yeah I know Suarez, Povich, Irvin and probably Kremer go in there but that's not really a desirable mix.  Crochet pitched another strong 7 innings with 11 K's last night.  He only threw 88 pitches.   His stuff is off the charts.  Statcast has more red than a Freddy Krugger movie.  Makes the O's rotation probably the best in a short series and one of the best in a longer series.  I know Elias is losing sleep over getting this kind of elite talent.  I keep thinking it's better to get a lesser pitcher  and keep the prospects but then I think the goal is winning and as someone said "there is no way the O's can ruin the farm in one deal".  It doesn't matter what I think, is Elias making a bet on this year and trading a guy he thinks he might not have a position for?

      Ugh. I DID. lol. The only reason I even looked at 2 weeks in the first place was because another poster took issue with me referencing his 2024 stat line. So many of you want to argue simply for the sake of arguing....gets pretty nutty.
