I can see the stats and see why Mateo was available, but I can also see the tools why teams will keep giving him a chance. 80 speed, plus range and arm for a 2Bman, gap power guy. Worth taking a long look for sure.

If nothing else he's entertaining.

We can all use another reason to tune in to a game.

Beckham? Broxton? Also, Jimmy Santiago Paredes comes to mind.

This guy could be entertaining to watch.

I actually saw Jimmy Paredes playing baseball a month or so ago when I went to a WV Power game, they used to be minor league team.

I’ll have to Google that, what league is that?

They are in the Atlantic League now,  Previously they were in the South Atlantic League, and were most recently affiliated with the Mariners.

There was actually 3-4 ex Orioles players in the game I went to including Paredes, though some had only been in our minor leagues.

It looks like he was released and now playing in the Mexican league (Paredes).

Or they saw a pitcher who can eat some low leverage innings and then DFA when used up.

As I said, I don't think Elias is dumb at all, but I am waiting to hear a story where "the system" saw something that others didn't and found a useful player for the future.

There isn’t a magic that others do not have anymore. There are special scouts. There are special coaches and managers. Most teams have models and algorithms and nerds with pocket protectors and taped glasses. They are all intelligent. Sometimes, they just get lucky and things fall right into their laps.

I will just say that Mike Elias has done a good job so far. A lot of work to do to fulfill his goals here. So far, I am happy with his progress, overall.

    • Thanks everyone. We are in a bad way here. Things are still evolving but the devastation is off the charts. This is worse than the 1916 flood, which was the worst on record.  Thanks for the support. Many people are suffering. We have the hospital open and functioning in disaster mode. Doing our best in a really bad situation. I may try to check into OH for a break, now and then. Go O's!
    • I think Suarez earned the right to make one of the first 5 starts next year while at age 29 McDermott and Young are finishing whatever they need to do so the Orioles can control their age 37 seasons at Arb 2 if they are any good.     I might be off on the years. Povich's progress this past month was enticing enough I do think he is closer to Kremer in the 3/4 section of the rotation than a swingman. Suarez has been so good this year I think it is bad mojo between Elias and his clubhouse if he doesn't get a few turns early.    Clubs using detailed video analysis rigorously to spot mechanics they can fix to unlock this kind of production I also think overrides anything ZiPS or PECOTA or whatever floats your boat there would say about Suarez's demographics. If we don't sweep but survive, I think Friday is an interesting discussion if you use Povich or Suarez in Yankee Stadium Saturday.
    • I usually agree regarding the timing.  But not in this instance.  His character and integrity is a big part of the public diacussion around Charlie Histle.  It's a healthy discussion we should have. He made public opinion part of his legacy.  Not because of his fame (i.e. normal athletic stardom).  But in how he tried to use it to gain support for his HOF push.  His character is a big part of who he was.   Ultimately you couldn't resist adding your opinion on the man. It's part of the discussion  and Pete's legacy.
    • It really is. Seeing the photos of the before and after is just heartbreaking.
    • I will be there today and have tickets to game 3 if needed    Hopefully rain is over by at 3:00 today - Lets Gooo
    • It’s crazy how cheap you can get tickets but parking is insanely expensive.
    • It looks like Sal can be 3rd or 4th any given day. Hyde isn't going to mess with Burnes, but you could also hook the Game 2 or Game 3 starter after 17-18 batters faced, use one of those high velo lefties on Witt, and go to a righty for Sal during the third time through the order.
