Whether you call up GRod then or in July, it changes nothing.

Untrue, you run the risk of him earning a full year of service time if he plays well enough to be a finalist for ROY thanks to the new CBA, which is something GrayRod could absolutely achieve given enough time at the MLB level, and which would be a complete waste in another tanking season like 2022. He most likely won't be up until that is no longer realistically possible.

I am not sure that punting is the right term.

We made no effort to improve the team, I would call that punting but ymmv.

I think this is a development year that sees several important prospects graduate to the majors.

That was going to happen no matter what, they still could have done more to set the team up for success going forward than sign Odor, Lyles, and some scrap heap guys (not that Odor and Lyles aren't scrap heap guys themselves really).

It wouldn't be a complete waste if it came with an extra draft pick.

Possible…but I doubt he’d pitch enough innings to be considered a serious threat to the ROY.  He pitched 23 innings last year. Giving even 100 innings this year would be reckless.

No, it’s not untrue.  It doesn’t matter when you bring him up as you gain the extra year as soon as we get into May.  If the goal is the gain the extra year, that’s all you have to do.

Yes, the earlier you bring him up, the more susceptible you are to the new rule fl(but it’s not a guarantee you lose the year) but if he misses the first 4-6 weeks of the season, it will make it that much harder on him because he will have an innings limit this year, so he will only be able to pitch so much.

And if he is that good that he can miss time and not throw as many innings and he still ends up top 2, that’s good for the future anyway.  Plus, he’s a pitcher, who knows how long his arm holds up.

That only applies if he is on the OD roster though, I believe. I don't think tgere is any chance of that happening.

It is untrue if he's a ROY finalist. You're simply wrong here.

You're thinking of Hall, I believe. GrayRod threw significantly more than 23 innings.

Yes, if he wins it.  However, once he gets past the threshold, the extra year kicks in.

Your point is a hypothetical.  Mine is the actual rule.  So no, we don’t need to wait a while to gain the year.  Waiting a while helps to protect the extra year but it doesn’t give it to them.  There is a difference.

If he is pitching well, they aren’t waiting until July or later to bring him up.

For someone who occasionally appoints himself Thread Police and tells people what thread they should post in, you are spending an awful lot of time talking about Grayson Rodriguez in a Cedric Mullins thread.

The whole point that was being made is that the O’s would/should delay Grayson’s debut until it’s really unlikely he could finish top 2 in ROY.   But I don’t think the O’s will worry about that.   If he pitches well in AAA we’ll see him sometime in May IMO.

Yea, it’s a poor point.  I’m not concerned with that.  As soon as he gains what is the extra year, bring him up. I mean, are they going to do the same thing for Adley?

Mullins Comp?  .912 OPS last year, poor OPS in the shortened 2020 season.  The Padres could be a good match for Mullins with their loaded system.

Padres would be an interesting fit, but not sure I'm all that interested in Paddack and/or Weathers as key pieces back.

The A.L is loaded with prospects this season it is not a year where you can miss 50 games and finish at the top of the ROY rankings.  You have Rodriguez, Witt, Tolkerson, and Pena.  All these guys are getting a full season so you cant miss a third of the season and win the award.

Well, it takes very little time to gain the extra year if you ignore the ROY issue.  This year Grayson couid be up on April 18 and not reach a full year of service.  I don’t think he’ll be up quite that quickly.   At most he we’ll have made 3 AAA starts by then.  I’m guessing they’ll give him at least 6-8.

Unless you do better.

    • He had a good ERA.  I think his FIP was 3.66 the one year and 4.66 the other.
    • I don’t understand why Basallo is untouchable. Don’t we have Adley. Trade Basallo for a #2 if possible asap.
    • Difference in trading vets from a team still in rebuild mode versus trading vets from a team with World Series aspirations.  We've not seen him trade vets since the rebuild ended.
    • Understood. But here's the thing (given the current economic structure of the game) there are three ways to handle payroll for a winning team (as I see them). One is the Rays/Brewers/Guardians way. Where you have maybe one long term substantive contract (mostly done while player is young and before he has made real money or achieved real fame) and most of the time the contract is an exploitive type deal with a kid from another country who comes from a context of poverty (not judging it is what it is). These teams continuously are reloading/retooling/ and have constant roster reshaping and turnover. The goal is to make the postseason and hopeful every once in a blue moon the stars align while you are there and you may be able to go all the way! While these teams are often good, they are rarely great. And are even less willing to do what it takes to get them over the top IMO. The proof is in the fact that this model has never led to championship success (unless you want to use the Marlins of over 20 years ago from 03'). Another model is the "big spenders model", who spend seriously and have World Series aspirations. Some spend all on FA (like the Padres/Mets) and are super aggressive with trades hoping to augment their talent as they chase championships, but rarely does this work because the foundation of the team is usually built so poorly. They may be good for a season or shorter term but struggle to sustain. Then there are teams like the Phillies/Dodgers who do a combo of developing and spending (let's call that the best of both worlds). Obviously this is the most preferable because you get the short and long term rewards. But it may not be realistic to think that the O's could ever do/have what it takes to fully do both. Then there is the Braves and Astros model. Still a higher payroll but minimizing of risks through extending younger players (Braves) or avoiding most long term contracts (Astros) but paying higher salaries on shorter deals. Obviously both franchises have been successful (won WS). Having said all this the reality exists that if/when you do longer term contracts (extensions or FA deals) for franchise/cornerstone/superstar type players, you most likely won't get the best value on the back end (think Paul Goldschmidt this year). That's just the economics of the game. But the thing is, the owners (especially our new group) have the money and then some to write off those things and keep rolling as "the cost of doing business".  When examining all winners of the World Series in the last decade a pattern is pretty apparent (with exception of the Astros first championship in 17') you have to spend in order to win.
    • An alternative... also from the Rangers:  Nathan Eovaldi.  FA after this season but has a $20m vesting option for 2025 if he throws 300 innings combined between '23 & '24.  It'll be close.  Between Scherzer (40 this month) and Eovaldi (34) who would you prefer?
