On Hoffman:

“RHP Nolan Hoffman was selected first overall in the draft by the Orioles, which is great for him and a smart pickup by the Orioles; Hoffman, Seattle’s fifth-rounder in 2018, missed most of 2019 with TJ surgery and obviously didn’t pitch in 2020, but bounced back in a strong campaign in a 2021 split between Modesto and Everett. A true sidearm reliever and polished college arm with excellent command and a truly funky delivery angle, Hoffman should advance quickly through the O’s less-robust system and could even see a late-season call-up if he’s able to arrive in Double-A and replicate his performance at the low minors. Good for him, bad for us.”

Sounds like we drafted a potential Darren O'Day type. I like it.

Check out that twitter thread of him at Driveline.  Perhaps they think he's made an adjustment that increases his potential.

It’s interesting that despite the improvement In our farm system, no one was interested in our minor leaguers, even for the price of basically nothing.

Here’s how the MiL Rule 5 works;

1.   The team can protect 38 players, beyond those on the 40-man roster.
2.   Only college players drafted in 2018 or earlier, or other player drafted or signed in 2017 or before, are eligible.

Therefore, nobody who Elias has drafted or signed had to be protected in the MiL phase.  You’d certainly think that 38 additional slots would be enough to protect anyone worthy, e.g. Sedlock, Adam Hall, Grenier, Knight, Neustrom, etc.

There are occasionally guys chosen from the MiL Rule 5 who make it to the majors eventually, but it’s pretty rare.   The O’a have lost a couple who did, like Yermin Mercedes.

I’d call this a success. We lost nobody and picked up three NCAA 2018 draftees. Elias has seemed to target this draft in trades. We didn’t select very many pitchers that year, but we’ve now acquired a bunch from that year.

I like what we did going the relief pitcher route. It’s not very realistic to find and everyday player or SP in this draft, but relief pitching seems like a good area to target. Especially with picking up a side armer.

Do we know which guys were specifically protected?

Here’s a piece by Melewski in which he gets comments from director of pro scouting Mike Snyder about Hoffman and Uvila:

On Hoffman: “We’re excited to welcome Nolan to our organization. After his 2019 season was cut short due to Tommy John surgery, we were encouraged with the progress he made in 2021. He has a history of limiting walks and is a groundball artist with a knack for inducing weak contact, really an outlier in this respect across the league. He presents a very difficult look, especially for right-handed hitters, and is a competitor who shows some personality on the mound.”

On Uvila: “We’ve been attracted to Cole Uvila for three or four years now, envisioning him as a multi-pitch reliever. He’s a late bloomer, the rare 24-year-old draftee who had bounced around a number of amateur programs and had overcome elbow surgery before really taking off in his pro debut in 2018. He shows a real feel for pitch design, overhauling his repertoire in a number of ways the last several years. He has a penchant for generating movement on all his secondaries and he’s knowledgeable about what he wants to achieve on the mound. We’re hopeful that we can help him harness the bat-missing ability to help achieve sustainable success. We know he has the ability, we know he puts the work in, and we know we have the right infrastructure in our player development group to support him.”
