My money is on Akin being “in different shape physically”. Well, not that different from last year, I mean.

I asked Dan Connolly in a chat today who looked to be improved this year based on what he’d seen.   He singled out Yusniel Diaz and Travis Lakins Sr. as looking good.   He also wrote a piece on Diaz recently where Diaz indicated he had been doing a lot of work on his legs to try to prevent the type of injuries that have plagued him in the past, and also altered his diet.

Diaz always looks good in spring training and warm weather. Let's see how that translates to AAA this year and of course, how long can he stay healthy?

If he altered his diet I have a hard time believing it was for the better.  Did you see his gut rounding the bases after his home run in one of the games this past week?

I saw the same thing, a few days ago. We are not alone in that observation, even Melewski said it in his chat. Funny thing is that Diaz now looks trimmer, suddenly. I guess my old eyes are playing tricks on me, or he is wearing a “slimming garment” under his uniform. lol

I am not going to complain about how he looks after hitting a homer.

Im not exactly encouraged that those are the two players sticking out..

Sure, but when he can’t run down a ball in the outfield?  He’s no Vlad Jr.  Anyway, that’s besides the point.  His career with the O’s is hanging by a string.  One would think he’d come in to spring training in the best shape of his life trying to impress the club.  Instead, he shows up with a gut hanging over his belt.

Not sure if this is the right place for this type of question. If not, I’m happy to post in another thread. 

I’m heading to Sarasota later this week to catch some spring training action. Does anyone have an info or details on best times to catch the minor league players and workouts at Twin Lakes? 

I realize that the minor leaguers play scheduled exhibition games too, but outside of those, are there set times where the public can drive there, spectate and maybe spark up a conversation with the players?  What type of access could I expect to the players at Twin Lakes in that regard?  Is it a pretty open/welcoming/informal type of atmosphere?

It’s my 1st Os spring training and I’m pretty excited. Also have tickets to a game at Ed Smith to catch the big birds, but I’m actually more excited to see and hopefully meet some of our talented minor leaguers. 

Any other tips or recommendations from seasoned, prior ST visitors are more than welcome.

Apparently he did. Roch wrote yesterday, "Diaz had six hits in 16 at-bats and barreled every ball to all fields. He’s in impressive shape. He looks the part. " There have been a couple of comments by the writers covering the Orioles that Diaz is in good shape this spring.

It would be awesome if Diaz suddenly became the player we expected. He has had several decent stretches, but always cut short by injury followed by a slow ramp up to doing good again.

Then last year happened.

Just playing devil's advocate...the Covid year in theory could have affected him more than others. Think of what it did to kids who suddenly didn't have organized sports leagues for the better part of 3 sports seasons. I know my son got out of shape and actually regressed. Who's to say that didn't happen with Diaz too?

      The tiebreakers are weird because we could get 2 wins vs Tigers/Twins and clinch the playoff spot but could also get 3 wins and not make the playoffs.

      Nope.  Too many years.  I agree with giving him the QO and letting him walk.  I might entertain a 2-3 year deal, but that's the most I'd go.

      Yes I should have said by inter division we hold tie breaker on both if head to head.  3 way tie we would finish ahead of Tigers but behind Twins but still get in.   So the magic number is really 5 but with asterisk on that because it could be 4 with the right 2 wins vs Tigers or Twins.

      Whatever seems to be possibly ailing Adley, IMO looks like it only affects him when hitting.  He sprang up outta his crouch like a Jack-in-the-Box and hustled for that foul pop/bunt yesterday and did not look like he was suffering any ill effects. But what do I know?  🤔🤣

      This season is far from over but that doesn't mean we can't walk and chew gum at the same time. This is going to be a very interesting offseason. The Os have a lot of spots likely secured for 2025 already and yet there is plenty of uncertainty as well. Barring a trade, these guys are definitely on the team next year: Adley, Gunnar, Holliday, Mayo*, Kjerstad, Westburg, Cowser, Urias, Eflin, GRod, Kremer, Felix, Perez, DC, Rogers and Cano.  That is 16 of your 26 man roster. The salaries for those 16 players will total around $46M, give or take. With those 16 players, you have your entire starting IF (including C), 2 OFers, 3 or 4 starting pitchers, 4 or 5 relievers (depending on Rogers) and your key bench guy. *Mayo potentially could start in the minors since he has looked  bad this year but its a SSS and I think they are committed to him and Im not sure going to the minors is going to be some major help for him.  But he will be on the active roster at some point next year. The Os also have the ability to keep (meaning they are under team control...salary estimates following player) Cedric Mullins (8.5M), Mountcastle (5.5M), OHearn (8M option), G Soto (6M), Dominguez (8M option...has 500K buyout), Mateo (3.2M), Akin (2.5M) and Webb (2.2M). For your 10 remaining roster spots, you need a back up C, 1 starting OFer, 5 pitchers and 3 other offensive players. Some of the relievers I listed will be brought back but others likely traded. Those are cheap contracts but the O's need to add another legit high leverage arm and someone(s) will be left off because of that. Either way, the team has plenty of money to add to this team given the low payroll of those definitely back.  Also, keep in mind Bradish will be on the payroll next year and I am assuming they will non tender Tyler Wells. Depending on his status, it is possible they bring him back but not sure I see the point. Having so many cheap players on the roster, many of whom will be cheap for a while, gives you so much flexibility. Also, it’s certainly possible that some of the players  I listed in the definite 16 will be traded, which will open up a spot or more.
