Seriously though - not sure a player has ever done more for themselves than he has done this year.  What a season.  Every homer he hits I just envision him saying "Ka-ching, ka-ching" as he rounds the bases.

Thing is, Judge may never have another season as good as this one, but he’s consistently been a very good player, and he’s done it in the New York pressure cooker.   So, I doubt he’ll fall off a cliff because of the pressure of living up to his contract.   In my mind, the big question isn’t how he’ll do next year.  The question is whether he’ll still be performing well 5 years from now, when he’ll undoubtedly still have several years left to go on a very expensive contract.  And of course, will he stay healthy?

Maybe one day before I leave this world the Orioles will enact some kind of FA revenge when the Yanks signed Mike Mussina (and maybe even Reggie Jackson).  Mussina and Jackson were 31-32 years old when they signed their contracts.  I don't think Judge is the one but stranger things have happened.  I wonder where Judge sees the Yanks moving forward in their quest to win their next championship.  They have a few free agents of their own but none more important to their image than he is.

1. If he hits 62+, I will personally recognize Judge as the single season record holder. And as a former McGwire fan, it stings a bit.

2. If he re-signs with NYY, I hope the contract hamstrings their payroll for many years. (And PS, I would never, ever, wish ill health or injury upon any player. However, if his performance lags, well, I ain't responsible for an act of the baseball gods)

I don't think it really has the same profound grip as Judge's season, due to Judge only having played for one team his whole career, but I always think about Zack Greinke's 2015 when he put up 9 WAR with a 1.66 ERA in 220+ IP as one of the greatest in the modern era. That was seriously throwing the gauntlet down for the FA market.

Trevor Bauer had a similar pace in the shortened 2020 season.  3 WAR in 73 innings, 1.73 ERA.

I still think Judge should have accepted the $213 offer. He was taking an enormous risk that he would have a great season, and he did, but still how many teams are going to line up to offer him 7 years? Maybe a team or two . I could see something like 40m for 5 years but that still doesn't get you to $213.
