Jason LaCanfora brought up a good point on this that I hadn't considered and haven't really heard anywhere else. If they didn't trade him last year because the offers weren't good enough, why would they trade him for even less this year? Also, this rebuild is past the "trade a veteran for a couple of A-ball lottery tickets" phase so I think he stays. And probably gets hot once the deadline passes.

I think he gets traded because it makes the most sense long term, and that is where Elias remains focused.   But who knows if the return will be worthwhile.   If not, Elias won’t do it.  So it could go either way, depending on what gets offered.

I think there’s a good chance he’s worth more than a year ago.  He’s another year removed from cancer and he has performed better.  There is also an additional playoff spot and the DH in the NL, so it opens up more landing spots.

It’s possible that teams that are sizing up Mancini are also interested in discussing Mullins & Santander first. If they can’t reach a deal for either, then they might move on to Mancini. Could make the best and finals take a while to emerge.

The Benintendi trade is useful because it likely gives us an upper bound on what Mancini could bring back.  Benintendi brought back a former 1st round pick who has had health problems but is pitching well in A-ball, plus a former 4th round pick who is pitching well in A-ball, plus a ninth-round pick from last year.   Trey will bring back less, but a high pick pitching well in A-ball would probably immediately become the O's third best pitching prospect.

If you’re into the whole the Orioles ownership wants to save a penny wherever they can take (I am not yet), if they trade him, the team that acquired Trey is on the hook for the $250k buyout of the mutual option. So, if you subscribe to that view, it would make it more likely that he would be traded to save the remaining salary this year plus the $250k buyout.

If they were pinching pennies like that Trey would have been gone two years ago.

It is logical that Mancini would bring back less than Benintendi, but logic doesn’t always hold in trade markets that fluctuate by the day.   So, we’ll see.

The Mets just acquired Tyler Naquin.  They acquired Daniel Vogelbach already.  Both of them are left handed, but how many OF/1B/DH types do they need?

I just saw that too and I'd have to think it's unlikely the Mets trade for Trey after picking up Vogelbach and Naquin. I agree with Frobby that Trey has been mentally preparing himself for a potential trade.

I think Mancini ends up not getting traded because Elias doesn't get a good enough offer to make it worth it.

New York Mets acquire Tyler Naquin, Phillip Diehl in trade with Cincinnati Reds

Quote

The New York Mets acquired outfielder Tyler Naquinand left-hander Phillip Diehl from the Cincinnati Redson Thursday night, the teams announced.

....

The 31-year-old Naquin gives the NL East-leading Mets a veteran outfielder and left-handed bat with solid career numbers (.280/.332/.473 with 50 homers) against right-handers. He has played mostly right field this season in Cincinnati but has experience in all three outfield spots.

I love Trey Mancini. Weve got a lot of outfielders who are going to be very good, and Trey is basically a 1b, DH, and a mediocre outfielder....but Trey represents something for the franchise too...its more than just sentiment...hes a clubhouse leader and loves the city...this is a tough call for me...I think we could lose him anyway next year....but in my view..I think he stays...Id hate to see him go.

You may be right that Trey will not be back next season, but in the last few days I've come around to thinking that this team has earned the right to take a shot at the playoffs, and Mancini should be here to lead the charge.

    • It looks like I misread your post as being about last offseason instead of the 2017-2018 offseason.  My mistake, but does that in any way affect my overall point - you know the part that I made explicit and you left out of your response - that all the old, reflexive Angelosian nonsense no longer automatically applies? I'm unclear on what you're driving at, especially if I have to go back to the 2017-2018 offseason when Peter Angelos might still have been giving input on running the team.  I think it's a stretch to try to draw parallels to those days, or even the John Angelos years, to David Rubenstein potential as an owner.
    • Irsay stealing the Colts in a midnight sneak away is in my top five depressing B-More moments, as well as the dreaded We Are Family Pirates in the ‘79 series. Otherwise, it’s a good bad list.
    • I forgot the name of the movie, but Jimmy Fallon was playing a BoSox superfan (tough role for an NY kid) and it was during the era of the ‘curse’ (right at the end of it actually) — a kid he was coaching asked, “What have the Red Sox ever done for you?” His character didn’t have an answer. But it made me think. The movie was out during the 14-years of losing seasons. I asked myself the same question about whether a lifetime of fandom was worth it. For me, outside of my family - 15 generations or more on the Eastern Shore - the O’s are also part of my DNA.  Win, lose, lose horribly, lose ugly, bad ownership, they just can’t shake me. All that said, I totally understand the frustration. It will take me a little longer to heal from this ugly exit to 2024.
    • In the market and $$$ for SP = Mets, Cubs, BOS, WAS and SFG (depending on Snell opt-out).  That’s enough chairs when music stops for Burnes and Fried to cash in, and still ample for second tier Eovaldi, Manea, Kikuchi, Flaherty.
    • So give Burnes $30-35 and you still have $23 plus whatever pay increase is approved
    • 1) I feel like we could’ve used some veteran star power leadership  2) Money 💰…if need be get a switch hitter  3) I’m standing by sign Burnes …I anticipate 6 or 7 years … Fail or Fall? I expect him to disappoint … In addition to Burnes I’d be looking to extend Eflin  4) I think we have a number of guys leaving … we almost certainly have a pick for Santander and Burnes if Elias fails. Spend some dam money  5) I think they’d approve $200 ish million …. But who know. I’ve come to believe his name should be bargain bin Mike. But I’m willing to wait and see since the new owners may push him to bulk up the team. If I’m Rubbenstein I’d want some star power to have a shot at a WS while I he’s still alert  6) I’m done with the batting coaches … bring in one competent guy. Preach get on base and make good contact over swinging for the moon.    In regards to pitching it’s the rash of arm injuries that has me concerned. Was it a fluke or coaching philosophy. I’ll chalk it up to bad luck but boy we had a lot of it  7) I think Gunnar is the guy you go after… if it’s a no …you can early extend Westburg. I’d want to see Adley rebound. If the front office is confident he will maybe you extend him now.    8.) I’m fine with McCann but perhaps we need a C3 with the way we regularly play both. 9) I’m fine with what we have if everyone is healthy this coming year and Felix is ready to roll from the get go. I believe he makes Cionel, Cano, Dominquez , Coulombe and Soto better. If you want an upgrade then I guess you can trade some as depth   10)I think he likes to take shots on lottery tickets… I don’t think it’s out of the box for him. Holliday depends if your moving Mullins along.
    • Just listened to it for the um first time. Not sure how anyone could um listen to that um entire uh press conference, um three uh times.
