Darren O' Day retires

Loved O’Day. The slider mixed with the rising fastball (even if it wasn’t a dominant fastball) really gave some hitters hell.

Also one of the more amusing moments with Buck, Darren and the Solowheel.

His K rate, with that velocity, was so crazy. That rising fastball couldn’t be touched. 
 

I wonder if he gets any thought for Os HOF? He was a huge part of that 5 year run.

I don't know man, Orioles Hall of Fame is pretty select company.

O’Day is 6th all time in games pitched for the Orioles, so I’d say he has a shot.   The relievers in the OHOF are Dick Hall, Stu Miller, Tippy Martinez, Eddie Watt, Hoyt Wilhelm and Gregg Olson.

Probably an O’s HOF member. He’s a big reason that we over performed our pythag and other projections each year. The O’day chant too.

Will always remember him as the middle of the formidable "BOB" bullpen, as Demper used to refer to the Brach/O'Day/Britton combo to close out games.

Let’s look at what these pitchers did as Orioles:

Hall: 9 years, 342 games, 770 IP, 124 ERA+, 11.8 rWAR

Miller: 5 years, 297 games, 502 IP, 145 ERA+, 12.0 rWAR

Martinez: 11 years, 499 games, 752 IP, 112 ERA+, 7.7 rWAR

Watt: 8 years, 363 games, 615 IP, 123 ERA+, 7.9 rWAR

Wilhelm: 5 years, 185 games, 616 IP, 156 ERA+, 15.6 rWAR

Olson: 6 years, 320 games, 350 IP, 176 ERA+, 11.8 rWAR

O’Day: 7 years, 391 games, 374 IP, 174 ERA+, 11.3 rWAR

Looking at this, you can see that relievers used to pitch more innings per appearance than they do now.  Also, Wilhelm made 43 starts as an Oriole.

In my opinion, O’Day compares well with this group and should get into the OHOF at some point.

And how many of those six were popular enough to have their own chant? Exactly. Not even a single “Killer Watt, Killer Watt!” or “Welcome Back, Otter!” that I can recall.
