Is a Roster Crunch Coming??

I'm not sure how to find this information, but some of the more experienced posters may know the answer to this.

Which players in our system would have to be added to the 40-man roster at the end of this year or be exposed to the Rule 5 draft?  I'm not sure how that works, but with so many talented players already on the 40-man and the talent in the minors, does anyone know which key minor leaguers we will need to make decisions on?

I've hear Elias refer to 40-man roster management and ultimately having to move some guys to avoid letting them get plucked off our roster.....so, I would love it if someone might be able to educate us about who we need to "deal" with at the end of the year so as to not lose them.

This is what you are looking for. Big names to worry about are Westburg, Kjerstad, and Haskin. There are a few pitchers too.

I like to use fangraphs roster resource section to show me when players are Rule 5 eligible and how many options players have, but our roster currently contains far less filler than in past years. You could probably remove guys like Krehbiel, Vespi, Zimmermann, and Gillaspie from the 40-man without too much heartburn

As we know, Westburg is not yet on the 40-man and if he's not traded or in the majors by the end of the year, he'll need to be added to the 40-man as will Hudson Haskins, Heston Kjerstad, and Ryan Watson just to name a few.

With Frazier and McCann coming off at the end of the year, that clears up two spots for sure.  I'm not sure who else is actually falling off the roster. 

I guess Norby and Cowser are the following year?  Coby Mayo too?

McCann is under contract for 2024 as well.

Got it.  Was thinking he only had one year left.  Actually, I don't hate the fact that he's got another year at this point.  I think he helps us.

But next year's version of Gibson will need to be added.

If Elias plays the current situation to his advantage correctly, the crunch will be eased somewhat by deadline trades.

Some of these prospects who are deserving 40-man roster guys but hard to fit in should be traded for a smaller number of more elite players.

McCann is coming off, sure.   But he will have to be replaced in the offseason by another backup C, either an acquisition or else someone like Handley being ready, which means that is an additional name that would have to be added.

So basically, I think you have to reserve a backup-C spot on the 40 man for SOMEONE when doing these calculations.

You see this org with less and less guys that you can easily drop off the 40 man.

That said, I’m not sure if you call it a roster crunch or a positional crunch but something needs to give soon.

We do this every year.  It's the fear of missing out or losing something I guess.  We've lost like Zach Pop in the 20 years.
