Yeah, that had to be a spiteful move because clearly he had an opportunity here to get back. Godoy is a guy they can add and then DFA if they need to just like Kolosvary, so maybe he felt like he was replaced anyways. It's worth noting though that Godoy has thrown out just one of 18 base runners this year in AAA under the new rules base stealing rules.

Overall Godoy seems like an average defensive catcher if teams don't take advantage of his inability to stop the running game. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/jose-godoy-608422?stats=statcast-r-catching-mlb

I watched him catch Graysons last game.  He did not inspire confidence.  I’ve always been a believer of the cliche that a good catcher goes unnoticed.   In the game I saw (granted 1 game so gonna give him a pass) there were a lot of “he should have made that play” moments.  Will be watching his next game with a keen eye.

Could it be that he has a better chance at playing time in another organization that doesn't have the #1 catcher in All Star votes?

I doubt he would have a chance with any other team based on how bad he whiffed on that pop fly foul ball. He was way off line from tracking that ball.

Didn't it hit the screen?  Was tough to tell on TV.  Looked to me like the screen deflected it from where he was.

How many catchers have made the 26 this year but never gotten into a game?  It’s quite odd. Torrens and Godoy for sure. I think Koloszvary did catch one inning but he also got zero plate appearances. Lot of shuffling the cards for players who have been quite literally useless.

Well, that didn’t last long. Benboom up, Godoy down.Sounds like a decision proceed where someone went into someone else’s office after the first move and said, “Did you realize that…”

I believe Kolozsvary and Godoy were both on the taxi squad when they got called up, so they were already nearby when the need arose.

Why do they need 3 catchers?

Because we could pinch hit for the 2nd catcher when Adley DH’s on Weds. 162. We need every advantage we can get. We could play a man short in the pen with the off day yesterday and Thursday.

Fingers crossed.

I know people hate three catchers, but it makes sense for Weds, but I guess that isn’t an option now since we all of a sudden have limited catcher depth.

I know the catcher typically rests on a day game after a night game, but with off days on both Monday and Thursday, I think they would just play Adley both games in Tampa Bay. Assuming McCann comes back when he is eligible, I suspect Bemboom will get to play one game against Seattle, and he and Godoy will be subject to being optioned, with Godoy probably being DFAd for the next 40 man spot needed.

I hate having three catchers, but when two of them are AAA placeholders, it would be especially galling.

    • It can’t hurt to do research on him and place a call to Cards GM & see what’s involved . We need SP help .
    • Here is my roster. Wasn't an easy task with some tough decisions C  Adley Rutschmann 2022 1B Rafaeil Palmeiro 1998 2B Brian Roberts 2009 SS Miguel Tejada 2006 3B Manny Machado 2015 OF Adam Jones 2015 OF Albert Belle 1999 OF Trey Mancini 2017 DH Chris Davis 2013          Bench Gunnar Henderson 2024 Bench Melvin Mora 2004 Bench Jay Gibbons 2003 Bench Matt Wieters 2011 --------------------- SP Mike Mussina 2000 SP Jason Johnson 2001 SP Wei-Yen Chen    2014 SP Erik Bedard 2007 SP John Means 2019          RP Jorge Julio 2002 RP BJ Ryan 2005 RP Jim Johnson 2012 RP Koji Uehara    2010 RP Zack Britton    2016 RP Felix Bautista 2023 RP Darren O'Day    2014 RP George Sherril 2008
    • You must choose a 26-man roster from 26 seasons. Here are the rules. Ignore 2020 Select 13 position players, with 9 starters and 4 bench players Select 13 pitchers, with 5 starters and 8 relievers You can only select one player from each season from 1998-2024 (exclude 2020) You can only select a given player ONCE  Starting pitchers have to be starting pitchers, relievers have to be relievers I will amend rules as appropriate from any suggestions you have. Go.
    • Now being reported on MLB Network in middle of Braves-Mets postgame wrapup.
    • Adley's teams have beaten Witt's teams by about 25 games/season the last 2 years and hopefully can maintain a lead the next 2-3 days. If McCann bats 9th, and Ragans is gone before Batter Faced #27, would the risk of forfeiting the DH be considered if a righty reliever is attacking McCann in a key spot?    Hyde has at least Kjerstad and Holliday on the bench, and maybe one of Mullins or Cowser if Slater starts. I am guessing the roster tomorrow will be 14 bats and 12 arms, so you might have one extra somebody for the team's 36th or 45th plate appearance. One factor against taking the chance...zombie runner is gone so the two teams could have long extra innings for the first time all year.
    • Not sure if it’s been shared already, but saw this and thought he would totally make sense as someone to target in the offseason. Cardinals are looking to reduce payroll, though not sure what a reasonable offer looks like for a 35 year old pitcher making 25 million a year for the next two years. A very light free agent class this year. Someone will definitely overpay for Burnes and I hope it’s not the Orioles. Severino, Buehler, Bieber and Max Fried are also intriguing. What say you? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/09/report-cardinals-open-to-offers-on-sonny-gray.html
    • I was looking that up too. He was in the bullpen throughout 2018 brewers run. Had a very solid first playoff start in 2021, then a not so good one in 2023 as you posted. Postseason is a different animal, and he’s got some experience, but he’s not proven in the playoffs. Time to make that money Corbin!
