Ah, another year of second guessing the lineup every single day!

I don’t know why people keep lumping O’Hearn in on posts like this. The guy had one of the few over .800 OPS on the team last year. He’s not remotely the problem.

I heard that he was initially scheduled to be DH, but told Hyde, “if Burnes doesn’t want me to catch him, then I don’t wanna play!”  Then he was seen softly sobbing in a corner of the locker room.

No,  not really, as Mullins has been slightly worse,  like .500 OPS versus .430 OPS.  Neither one should really be starting with those kind of numbers.

Exactly.   And looking at the larger sample size of their careers, Slater has a .799 OPS vs LHPs, and Cedric's is .632.

As our lineup is presently constituted, Slater should be the choice over Mullins vs lefties.   Even though every time it happens there will be cracks about Sigbot and other such things ridiculing the move.

Yeah since Slator was the right handed bat they acquired for LF and CF vs lefties he should play most games.  Now I will agree he shouldn’t have been the guy they are counting on down the stretch that a different argument.   Still hoping someone want to shed little money and put someone on waivers and we can claim.  Might be hard though picking last as other teams get first shot.

I would just hope that Slater could return to being the player he was the past 3 years with San Francisco.   That guy would be a fantastic fit on this team as a backup OF who plays primarily vs lefties.   Now maybe age has cuaght up and after being a solid MLB player at 28/29/30, he has dropped off the table at age 31.   I don't know for sure why he's dropped off this year.   But he is coming off an injury from last season, got off to a poor start, got traded, and was traded again.   It seems like people on here want to just judge him completely on this year's stats only.

I usually put a lot of stock in career versus yearly numbers,  but there are some exceptions. This is one of them.   Just like past vets with good career numbers that we signed or traded for (Phillips, Odor,  etc) sometimes guys just are slipping and/or having a down year and can't be counted on to reach those career numbers.   Point is simply Slater is not that good,  and I hate how much he's starting.  It's a combination of injuries and some poor roster management that leaves us having to choose between two terrible hitters to fill that spot in the lineup.

He started 1 of first 8 games before the last two games.

      One day you wake up and Cedric Mullins is at 2.1 rWAR, 2.0 fWAR, 105 OPS+ and making ridiculous flying catches in the outfield.   That play last night, by the way, was a 10% probabilty catch.

      Amazing how we have lowered our standards, 4 runs in 4.2, 5 hits, 2 walks, 2HRs is not "too awful"

      Mountcastle has plenty of value. Still decently young, great defender, and he does have pop. I do think Waltimore has gotten into his head, so not sure if it’s altered his swing and approach and that’s carried over to other stadiums, but there’s no secret here. Just look the before/after Waltimore power numbers for him.

      I agree. Thought he looked pretty solid and pitch efficient aside from the 3rd. Overall, I’ve been happy with Cade’s growth this year. He’s tremendously cut down on walks, and they’re still working on mixing pitches and working on individual pitches as well. I do agree that the pitches hit for dingers were poor pitch choices and execution, but otherwise…he kept them in it. Bullpen imploded, of course. And the offense stunk.

      I believe Mateo was hurt a week before the trade, but was only the the 10 day IL. While that may have had nothing to do with the Norby trade.. it should have. Elias was good with Norby and/or Holliday as the "rookie replacement" options for Mateo. What bothers me about this whole thing was, Norby could've been the right replacement for Mateo.. had Holliday faltered during the stretch run, but Elias seems more inclined to bring in "outsiders" who have MLB experience. Vavra was also an option,...whatever.  Analytics driven I would think, but it could also be a deflection should the draft picks get too overwhelmed. That's the 2-sided coin flip option for Elias. As for the hitting being fixed: Who wants 2 bosses telling you the same thing.. or are they instructing different approaches? I don't get it.  Although I'm not one to delve too deep into anything anymore (EADD), there are games when I feel the hitters have no clue about what to expect from all the SP's they are facing game in & out. Especially the younger SP's. Oh, and for FFS, stop swinging at ball 4 just because it's a fastball count. Fastball counts don't mean diddly anymore, and the O's are a team proving it.
