Adley Rutschman 2024

Defensively, Adley’s been like a top goalie behind home plate, leading the majors at 9 blocks above average.  He has not allowed a passed ball all season, and incredibly, only 5 wild pitches have gotten past him in 39 starts at C.

in the 6th inning yesterday when Grayson was starting to lose his command, Adley smothered 3 errant pitches in a 4-pitch sequence, I think.

Though his throws are often bounced or off-line, he has his CS% up to 25%, better than the league average of 22%.  He’s also made one error on the season.

It could be that Gunnar doesn't really want to sign with the O's but just wants to have the biggest contract in baseball.  Boras already hinted at that by saying that a player like Gunnar adds billions to a franchise value.  Imagine what Boras will be asking for.

Os83 , that part is what I’ve been wondering about also . We all like to think Gunner , Adley , Holiday & Westburg will automatically sign extensions with Orioles . But how do we know for sure ?

Adley is just casually on a .289/32/121 pace, as an above average (if flawed) defensive catcher. That’s a performance that’d be in the MVP conversation some years.

Too bad for him he shares a team with Gunnar Henderson, and Aaron Judge exists.

It is amazing how little fanfare he gets on this site.  He does not make the flashy play like Gunnar at short but is the steady force that I think this team revolves around.  It is not a coincidence that this team started winning immediately when he was promoted.

Perhaps he should be in the MVP conversation now. This Yahoo article has him #5 in the race. Not too shabby. https://sports.yahoo.com/checking-in-on-the-mlb-mvp-races-which-players-have-added-their-names-to-the-mix-through-the-first-third-of-the-season-213000493.html

Give him a day off tomorrow?

Sure didn't bother him on that homer.   Frankly, with the O's up 8-1 when his hand got hit, I was surprised they didn't pull him immediately and get some ice on that hand.   But maybe Burnes had told Hyde he really didn't want to pitch to McCann.  😇

Adley’s hopefully at the end of a down swing. But the (purposeful?) substitution of walks (patience) for average/power (aggression) hasn’t really aged well.

BB% and OBP have dipped severely while AVG/SLG has remained the same. He was a doubles machine his rookie year. Now he has 12 at the all star break. He’ll hit a career high in homers but he’s at his lowest OPS+ of his career.

But I’m sure he’ll tick back up after some All Star break rest. Everybody seemed to slump at the same time last week.

Disappointing end to the first half for Adley for sure. I kind of hate his change of approach this season, whether it's his fault or the hitting coaches. It's just not the type of hitter he is.

I think he needs to pick his spots at the plate better.  There's no reason why he can't improve his walk rate and OBP and still be somewhat aggressive.  He just has to balance patience and aggressiveness.

Despite his recent struggles at the plate, I still think he's the cornerstone of the club and is deserving of the first extension of any of our young guys.  Hopefully, that's an off-season objective.

He needs to catch more, DH less and have more actual days off.

Hopefully they get Mayo up here and stop using McCann vs lefties so much…because he’s terrible.

I can see why they may have drafted Anderson and want to catch him up so he could DH and back up catcher.  A switch hitting, bat to ball contact hitter would be nice to have.  Dreaming, of course 🤩

We watch Adley all weekend. He looks tired. The 3 games were brutally hot and he caught the first two and DH'ed on Sunday. The weather was brutally hot and humid. Typical Balmer summer days. You have to believe that he gets more time off in the second half, but they are riding him really hard. Yankees were in town. You need his bat in the lineup. I get it.

Let's hope the Allstar Break is an opportunity to chill and refresh. He needs it.
