Stowers is back to Orioles, Kjerstad optioned

In order of preference:

1. Kjerstad playing 3+ times a week with Santander, Mountcastle, Mullins resting

2. Stowers playing 1 time a week with Kjerstad in AAA

3. Kjerstad playing 1 time a week with Stowers in AAA

If they’re not going to do #1, I guess I’m happy they’re at least not burying Kjerstad on the bench anymore. But if they weren’t going to play Kjerstad why did they even bother calling him up? Should have just been Stowers the whole time.

Then they should trade Kjerstad, unless they're solely keeping him around to replace Santander next year.

That's what they're doing. Plus depth. I think the original plan was to switch off between the two but Cowser has played well enough to hold on to the job.

There is a world in which Cowser stays as cold as he has been lately and Kjerstad gets more of an opportunity. If Cowser gets going again, maybe we don't see Kjerstad until he replaces Santander but that's really not a bad outcome.

There has to be some reason they didn't just activate Hays from the IL.   TBD.

They did, according to Roch's latest tweet. McKenna DFA'd.

I think he makes the most sense of any “big name” to be traded.

That’s exactly what his role will be. Stowers in the mix too. Let’s face it, Kjerstad hit .143 and didn’t look good in the OF. He’ll be a big part of this team going forward.

The next prospect that will get a chance to make an impact up here will be Mayo. Probably in a month when the super two date passes.

That makes the most sense right? I mean there only seems to be one place on this team next season for either Mayo or Kjerstad. Neither would really be good candidates to go back and repeat AAA next year. With Holliday here at some point between now and the beginning of next season the infield is full especially given Westburg’s ascension.

Santander walks in FA after the season and one of Kjerstad or Mayo take over in RF. That leaves the other to trade. It appears that Mayo (given his age - 3 years younger) would hold the most value between the two. It’s going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

It’s still puzzling to bring Kjerstad up and then never really play him. Like what was the point?

I don’t see a world in which Kjerstad, Mayo, and Holliday all co-exist on the Orioles roster unless they plan on getting rid of O’Hearn, which doesn’t seem wise as he is one of the best hitters on the team.

I think it's getting more likely we see Mayo as a Santander replacement next year with Kjerstad getting traded for pitching help when trade season heats up.

Yeah, I think this seems to be likely too.  Wouldn't be surprised to start seeing him get outfield work and Kjerstad traded at the deadline.

I agree, if Kjerstad was a good defender I think they would keep him and think about a full-time gig next year. They just seem like they don't want to play him in the field.

I'm not sure, I think the defense between Cowser and Kjerstad (although the sliding catch was very nice!) is what kept HK on the bench despite how cold Cowser has been.
