The 2024 Trade Deadline

I don't know if anyone is questioning if the Orioles will still qualify for the postseason after this recent rough stretch. However, the concern that I am seeing/reading/hearing is that once October begins, we don't have the kind of pitching talent necessary to go deep into the Fall by winning multiple rounds against teams who have better pitching talent.

Language like “…salvage the season” is beginning to appear which is more than a little premature. I share the concern about having enough pitching for the postseason.

Oh ok. I have been reading "salvage the season" in terms of meeting preseason World Series contending hopes, not simply make the playoffs. IMO making the playoffs and getting exited early in round 1 would be a major disappointment, especially considering that we traded for Burnes in the offseason.

Can’t disagree with this.

But keep in mind, the postseason is about 80% crapshoot and other teams have their own weaknesses. Cleveland’s starting staff is 💩, Seattle has a weak lineup, and NY has a weak lineup outside Soto and Judge (and their bullpen is showing weakness too) so our postseason success is unlikely to hinge on one acquisition.

I agree!

IMO we need at least another 2 acquisitions. We need another credible starting pitcher and another high end high leverage reliever. AND we need some of the guys we have to pick it up and start performing better.

I don't trust Bryan Baker, but he's stepped up big time since being called up. Until Elias can bring in some reinforcements Baker can help stop the bleeding and be someone who can be counted on this season.

I can't believe I just typed the above.

He has been outstanding, and, yes, whoda thunk it? :)

It's low hanging fruit to laugh at the doom-and-gloom crowd, the sky-is-falling Chicken Littles, and the run-for-the-hills Billies.  So, fruit duly plucked. 🤣
However, there is some truth within their pessimistic outlook.  It's absolutely fair to be concerned about our pitching.  Who's to say who is right or wrong in how much concern there should be?  Well, we all have a say.  It's why we're here.

The beloved @Roy Firestone is admittedly the most pessimistic Game Thread poster in history, yet no one questions his love of the O's.  Nor should we berate those with strongly pessimistic views about our chances, as being 'less of a fan.'

It's just my two cents, but I think it's readily apparent that we need to add to our pitching and I believe Elias will address it.  A quality starter and a reliever or two would likely do wonders for the team... and our collective sanity. :P  I just don't feel we'd need to deal Holliday, or Mayo, or Basallo to get there.  Then again, I may be wrong.

I floated this idea the other day.  Going to try a slight different version today.

For Crochet,  Kjerstad, Norby, DeLeon

For Fedde,  Bradfield, McDermott, Chace

1. Feel free to call them overpays or underpays

2. Do the White Sox say no?

I think those are two strong packages or one overall very strong package.  I think the Crochet deal is clearly stronger than the Burnes deal was at the time for a pitcher with more control but durability questions.

We still hold onto our top 3.  They can try to manage Crochet’s workload if they/you believe in that.  Bottom line, we strongly upgrade the starting staff.

Burnes, GRod, Crochet, Kremer, Fedde.   You’re back to having depth with Irvin to the pen and Povich to AAA.   You can use Crochet as an opener to manage his innings.

We still have chips like Beavers, Willems, Baumeister, Fabian to get rental relievers.

Of course, this guts a lot of top and mid level prospects but it keeps Basallo, Holliday, and Mayo here.  With the upcoming draft, and the Latin program showing real progress in the lower minors, I think there’s no doubt we can take the position player hit.  Losing McDermott and DeLeon is tough but if you get two starters from the Sox you have to send some arms back.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking. DeLeon, Bradfield and McDermott are painful to part with but I think you need about 3 prospects that will hurt like that on top of Kjerstad and Norby. And I think the White Sox will want 2 good pitching prospects in that type of deal.

I’d obviously prefer to give up some lesser pitching prospects, but the only pitching prospects I’m not all that fond of and think we could deal as a “sell high” are Johnson and Baumeister. And their value is not high enough to move the needle that much. I’d do that deal you proposed and I think the White Sox do too, or at least they won’t get a better offer than that.

Have Suarez piggyback Crochet, and keep Crochet around 3-4 IP, 50-60 pitches per start until September when you stretch him back out. And maybe you can plug in Povich or Irvin for some spot starts when there aren’t off days to give Crochet 5 days rest when you can, or skip some starts when you can if he needs it.

Are the odds makers putting our WS odds lower now than on OD?

I think CHW says no to the Crochet deal.  But yes to the Fedde deal.  Does Elias put a 1sr rounder on the block?

If I’m Elias theres no way in hell I’m doing that Fedde deal. I’m not even sure I do that Crochet deal given his durability concerns/innings limit.

I wouldn't include Kjerstad in any trades.  He's a part of the big league club now.  Heck, I wouldn't even include Povich in since he's in the current rotation, or McDermott.  If we trade pitching it will be not those two.

We need a frontline SP for game 2 or 3 of a playoff series.  One high leverage RP.  One experienced vet reliever.

I think that's accomplishable by using Beavers, Norby, De Leon, Forret, Baumeister, Fabian, EBJ, etc...

So basically you believe that non of our competitors will offer top 100 prospects for difference making players (a game 2 starter)?

    • They also haven’t announced the times, yet.
    • Well, I don't like to predict things on message boards but my prediction is we will not acquire two pitchers with a better Zips projection than Kremer. I would be more surprised by two than I would be by zero.
    • You can’t ignore how he pitched against Detroit and the makeup of their roster. He has more value than even Suarez if that is who we end up playing.
    • So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???
    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
