The 2024 Trade Deadline

I’m not a huge Tate guy but he has a 3.64 ERA since 2020. This year he has a 3.62 ERA, 3.65 xERA, and 3.99 SIERA. His track record has been pretty good and I think he’s perfectly fine as one of the first 2 options out of the pen right now.

And that’s largely boosted by 2022, a year he has never really come close to.

Tate has been fine and I think Hendricks would be fine but not much better than what we have.

Right he has been fine. If we didn’t have him, we wouldn’t tell the difference, just like 2023.

He’s nothing special. A mid 3s ERA reliever in this era isn’t that big of a deal.

It also includes a 4.39 ERA in 2021. He’s at a 3.62 ERA this year with underlying numbers pretty close to that number. I don’t think he’s great but it was more in response to his track record. I think Tate is likely to perform closer to his track record going forward than Hendricks.

A few things. He's on the IL right now, but yes he has one of the most dominant pitches in baseball. Like literally in the top 5 to 10. The issue is that he got hard abused in 2023. He was also getting hard abused early this year and that led to his falling apart over the last few weeks before he was sent to the IL.  He walks a few too many, but he does get a ton of swing and miss. I suspect that when he comes back from the IL, if he has a few clean appearances, he'll likely be dangled, but given that he has 3 years of control he'll probably take a fairly decent package to land.

Except Hendricks has a career and track record of being good.

This isn’t 2019.  He has an ERA close to 5 the last 4 years.  They moved him out of rotation because he was so bad earlier in the year and probably was very close to being DFA.  So not someone I have any confidence in.  Trading for him would make the Jack Flaherty trade look like we got Cy young.

I don't know what it will take but we need a high leverage reliever and a #3 starter. I mean I'm sorry but Cano isn't a high leverage guy and Hyde keeps sending him out in high leverage situations. And I guess Kremer is our #3 guy when he come back but if we want to go deep into the playoffs we need someone better IMO.

Do you think Skubal would be available for a package like Basallo, Kjerstad, Norby and Bradfield? Seems like it would take a huge package to pro him from Detroit, but we'd still have Mayo, Holliday, Fabian, Stowers, Beavers etc in the system.

As SG said, it's highly likely (if not a sure thing) that Detroit would agree to that trade... but we would never offer that.  Take Basallo out and that package is closer to what I'd deem fair return for Skubal for 2.5 years of control, but still might not be enough.  The issue is, as you said, prying Skubal away.  Would Elias deal one of his incredible top three prospects to get Skubal?  I have major doubts.  I guess what I'm really saying is the odds of Skubal to Baltimore appear remote.

I'll kidnap Elias if he tries to make that trade. I like Skubal, but not at that price when he's pitched over 117 innings exactly one time (149 total) during his career.

This weekend could be a win/win. Toronto wins and Yankees lose. Yankees win and Toronto is becoming closer to sellers.

I'm rooting for Toronto!!!! Yankees winning does absolutely nothing for me! Plus, IF Toronto ever sells, no guarantee they sell our way. Go Jays!!! Keep them spoiled brats crying!!!!!

Skubal is a stud that will require a package similar to what was posted.

My issue with Skubal is the injury history and the lack of innings.

OTOH, he’s a stud and a lefty. If we didn’t have to give up any of the big 3 prospects and obviously not trading any of the main young guys on the ML roster, I would trade whatever it took to get him.

    • The O's would have Crochet thru 2026.  They could also give him the Gray Rod rest treatment and then pitch him out of the pen until September.
    • I mean this take is fairly reasonable and I sympathize with your frustration in this discussion. He's not putting up superhuman numbers. He's putting up good numbers that are trending up, and factoring in his age and position, it's pretty exciting. But like Frobby said, he's not untouchable, it's just that it seems unlikely there's a trade fit for him because it would cost the other team someone equally as exciting, with years of control, and who is ML ready. Those guys just don't exist much on the trade market.
    • I hear you but everything seems kind of moot if Crochet and his agent want him on an innings limit. Even if they don't, I doubt Elias would throw caution to the wind like that and abuse the guy's arm. So it seems unlikely Elias would give the White Sox SP-level prospects for a guy they'd be forced to use in the bullpen.
    • I'm thinking there is a good chance Elias makes a strong play for Crochet.  Hear me out before I get drowned out in a chorus of boos.  It seems that Westburg, Mayo, and Holliday can not co exist on the same team.  Too many bodies not enough positions.  That's not even accounting for Basallo (is he more of a 1B/DH) and Kjerstad (same).  Imo, it's better to solve the backlog of prospects before it becomes obvious and the O's hand is forced and the O's have to accept supoptimal value.  There's this little problem of the O's very obvious lack of pitching depth.  O's #1 is Burnes, #2 is Gray Rod, #3 is ??, #4 is ??, #5 is ??.  Yeah I know Suarez, Povich, Irvin and probably Kremer go in there but that's not really a desirable mix.  Crochet pitched another strong 7 innings with 11 K's last night.  He only threw 88 pitches.   His stuff is off the charts.  Statcast has more red than a Freddy Krugger movie.  Makes the O's rotation probably the best in a short series and one of the best in a longer series.  I know Elias is losing sleep over getting this kind of elite talent.  I keep thinking it's better to get a lesser pitcher  and keep the prospects but then I think the goal is winning and as someone said "there is no way the O's can ruin the farm in one deal".  It doesn't matter what I think, is Elias making a bet on this year and trading a guy he thinks he might not have a position for?
    • Then look it up yourself and try to understand. Why does everyone else have to explain it to you?
    • Different spring, different sprain. Same unfortunate result.  I wonder the same year return rate of a “partial UCL tear” as Bautista had.
    • Ugh. I DID. lol. The only reason I even looked at 2 weeks in the first place was because another poster took issue with me referencing his 2024 stat line. So many of you want to argue simply for the sake of arguing....gets pretty nutty.
