The 2024 Trade Deadline

My thoughts regarding this trade deadline:

  • The Mariners will deal for bats via farm system depth, not from their starting rotation, so an O's & M's deal is not likely.
  • Elias will not seek a deal with the White Sox for Robert or Crochet.  Kopech? Possibly.
  • Elias will not trade for a 'big bat', but could add a RHH OF who can play a solid CF.
  • Elias will add a starter and a reliever.  The quality of each may not match the hopeful expectations of many posters here.
  • Elias will not trade Holliday, Basallo, or Mayo.  Kjerstad is a possibility to be dealt, but I would not be surprised if he remains.
  • Most posters here will be disappointed when the deadline ends, in that we didn't acquire enough talent.

Again, these are just my thoughts as of now.  I could feel different tomorrow. :P

If they’d do prospects for prospects … I’d throw them Stowers or Norby for Logan Evans

How is it an awful trade? With the exception of Povich all are replaceable or trading from depth.

Many posters would like to retain all valued prospects at all costs. They are of the opinion that this will allow us to avoid the terrible years of 18- 21. Success in the post season is random and due to luck. So acquiring top level talent to make a World Series run is irrelevant.

Good summary. This would be my guess as well. Won't stop people from repeating proposals that make no sense and then getting mad when they don't happen.

I may propose ones I doubt will occur as well, though I try my best to be fair to both sides.  For example, I would LOVE to get Skubal but find it unlikely mainly because I'm not sure Detroit would do it without one of HolBaMayo. Coining our big three with that term instead, as I'm tired of retyping all three names. LOL

Now, if you want to really rile up the Hangout, post a poll asking if they would be in favor of a straight up Holliday for Skubal swap.  🤣

Horrible trade proposal by Bleacher Report:

Garrett Crochet to the Baltimore Orioles

To BAL: LHP Garrett Crochet

To CWS: 1B/OF Heston Kjerstad, LHP Cade Povich, 2B Connor Norby, OF Dylan Beavers

Who would have guessed Garrett Crochet would be the most sought-after prize of the 2024 trade deadline?

The 25-year-old made his first career start on Opening Day this year, and he entered the year with a 2.71 ERA in 72 career relief appearances, missing the entire 2022 season recovering from Tommy John surgery.

He tossed six innings of five-hit, one-run ball on Opening Day, and after some rocky outings in April, he has been absolutely rolling for the past two months with a 1.36 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 59.2 innings over his last 10 starts.

All told, he has a 3.05 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and an AL-leading 130 strikeouts in 94.1 innings, and with club control through 2026 teams will be lining up for a chance to add him to their starting rotation this summer.

The deal that sent Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres brought back a consensus Top 100 prospect in Drew Thorpe and two other promising prospect pieces in Samuel Zavala and Jairo Iriarte, and while he has a longer track record of success he also had one less year of remaining control.

Slugger Heston Kjerstad, left-hander Cade Povich and infielder Connor Norby are all MLB-ready pieces that could immediately plug into the White Sox lineup, while Dylan Beavers is also knocking on the door with strong numbers at Double-A.

It's a steep price to pay for the Orioles, but it gives them a potential replacement for Corbin Burnes atop the rotation if he departs in free agency while also bolstering the staff for this year's playoff push.

I would do the trade.  It enables the O's rotation to be back in the conversation for best in baseball, especially playoff baseball where 5th and probably 4th starters don't matter.

Burnes, Crochet, and Gray Rod is ready for all opponents.  O's will have to baby Crochet down the stretch but thus trade is about the postseason not the regular season

A.  Kopech is awful, 5ish FIP and essentially Mike Baumann + a tick of FB velo.

B.  Even if AAA guys are “expendable” or “replaceable” trading all 7 at this deadline is not wise (need some dry powder for the offseason and next trade deadline too)

Kopech is not part of the proposed trade

Absolutely unhinged trade offer lol.

If you told me that Crochet was going to be able to start the rest of this year and remain healthy going forward, I’d make that trade in a heartbeat.

But neither of those things are likely imo, so yea, it’s a bit much.

Would you feel different if it were for Skubal?

They would argue it’s not enough.

there is only one top 100 prospect included and you are getting a young potential top of the rotation arm.

Yeah ….Getz is an idiot. He has serious injury concerns. 92 innings already after 24 innings last year and nothing they are before. A smart team would limit his innings or shut him down soon.
