What date is that? I feel they both may.

Holliday has already had 34 at bats.  I'm not sure home many plate appearances he has had.  Likely 40 or less.  Plus there is the 45 games limit.  The club won't be able to bring him up before early September.  The usual 4t days/129 plate appearances apply to Mayo.  He won't be able to be promoted until the second half of August and, will need the occasional, day off to stay under the rookie limits.

I don’t think they are linking it to any dates like qualifying for rookie of the year.  I think they would prefer to bring them up when they feel like they are here to stay.  They also  will have to move on from somebody like Urias and/or Mateo.  I just think they aren’t ready to remove that veteran presence yet.  Injuries could change that or a trade.  There is no doubt in my mind Mayo would be on this team if his defense was considered good enough.  I am sure they are working on that at AAA everyday.  He doesn’t have anything else to prove offensively.

The move to make is Mayo for Urias. The only concern is that if Mayo flops defensively then who do you go to?  Urias would have to be traded or DFA’d. Westburg would be here obviously.

I think bringing Mayo up is the right call. Just pointing out the flip side of the discussion. Mayo offers too much to keep him down. It’s a move to win a WS.

If Mayo flops defensively then you put Westburg at 3rd with Mateo at 2B. If one of them gets injured you bring up Norby. We have more than enough redundancy at every IF position. Playing Urias (and his .625 OPS) is unacceptable when Mayo is basically putting up

Aaron Judge numbers at AAA.

I’m guessing if Hays isn’t able to play the move is Hays to DL, Mayo up.   Then, you let Urias and Mateo ride the bench.     OF is Cowser, Mullins and Kjerstad/Santander.  You can find plenty of at bats for everyone and rotate DH to keep people rested.

Sunday Night Baseball at Camden Yards would be a pretty cool time to debut Mayo.

Didn’t they add Norby to the taxi squad for that?

But then you don’t have a backup 3b. If something happens to westburg, you push Gunnar to 3rd, Mateo to as and don’t have a 2b. If it’s an injury, you make a roster move. But if something happens mid game, you have no utility player

    • You gave the arbitrary date of July 19th.
    • I don't have a Baseball America subscription, but you are able to read an in depth analysis on Coby Nayo's batting metrics here https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/coby-mayo-jackson-holliday-headline-10-statcast-standouts/ Interesting stuff.   He looks like a guy we should consider holding onto.
    • It's not the next 18 days, it's the next 30 days less the AS break, roughly 15% of the season.  My point is that a lot will change in the last two weeks before the trade deadline.  It's a little early to call a radical seller's market where Tanner Scott is the clear front-runner.
    • Unnecessarily Socratic response, FRobby. There is no position more important to the Orioles right now than backup catcher as crazy as that sounds.  The incumbent is hurting the team with his bat.  Basallo will some day soon create a great split responsibility with Adley and another big bat at least vs RHP. 2B?  All eggs are in the Holliday basket, but if he can't stay healthy this year and Mateo falls off as in the past, 2 great backup options exist 1) Norby or 2) Westburg moves back to 2B and Mayo is promoted to play 3B. CF? Of all CFs in the game I'd trade him for Judge (if I could be sure the contract would not screw up the chance to sign Gunnar) and I'd trade him even up for Jackson Merrill who is 21, from Baltimore area, and hitting well for the Padres, but is another LHB.  I wouldn't trade him for Duran, for example, who is 2nd in WAR among CFs at 1.4, has good OPS, but is approaching age 28 despite 4 years of team control.  No way I trade him for Robert as I have detailed elsewhere.  I think the Orioles are better off for now, using some combination of Cowser, Mullins, and Hays in CF rather than trading Basallo for anyone else not named above that comes with a significant price tag. Corner OF spots, DH, 1B are jammed now with players/prospects who can hit (Cowser, Kjerstad, Mountcastle, Santander, O'Hearn, Stowers).  No additions needed. 3B?  Westburg is having a great year and Mayo is ready and should be promoted which puts pressure either on 3B to move Westy to 2nd or the already jammed corner OF/1B/DH group, but he is a much-needed RHB.
    • I think you have to add Grayson to this list.
    • Scherzer doesn’t carry injury risk?  Surely you haven’t followed his last couple of seasons very closely.
