The Rangers Series, 7/19-7/21

Recommended Posts

Hopefully the O's don't pull what they did in the Cubs Series and give the Rangers a boost back into playoff contention.  I feel like the O's made their trade deadline harder w/ making the Cubs a contender again.  Hoping we crush the Rangers' playoff hopes.

They are leading with Eovaldi rather than Scherzer tomorrow as we get back to it.    Eovaldi is perhaps mid-month pitcher of the month favorite - 18/0 K/BB and 3-for-3 at 7-inning starts.

Rangers media thinks they know the probables, though I haven't seen any reports from Orioles-land.     Houston and Seattle, the two clubs TEX is chasing, play each other as Chris Young starts getting his last ~10 games of info how the defending champs playoff odds will move before the deadline.

1-0. Tough game against Scherzer.

@Just Regular thanks for posting these. They are good reference points during the series.

Tonight is probably Scherzer's next to last start before the big 4-0.     He is a July 27 birthday, and tonight he'll pull even with Gerrit Cole making his 6th turn of the 2024 regular season.

5 starts is a month of full-time run for an SP - here's how Scherzer has done so far.

2.96 ERA is 24th of 74 qualified SP over the last 30 days.

17.9% K-bb is 29th

Stuff+ is the outlier down at 59th

PitchingBot ERA estimator is 21st

Fastball velocity Fangraphs giving as 92.7 this year, down from 93.7 last year.

It will be the Orioles second look at 2024 Scherzer - Albert Suarez beat him 2-1 last month.    Cowser got him for a HR that night, so maybe a guess Kjerstad will take one extra day.

I am just here to say that a 0.082 avg catcher just hit a Weaver special to put the Rays up 4-0 on the NYY.

It would be really nice to sweep this series against TX.

NYY-TB game over, with ninth-inning comeback falling a bit short. Devilish Rays 9, Pinstripes 1.

if O's can sweep TX and send them into a swoon, I would love to see Elias negotiate for a few of their pieces

Texas has been playing well and is getting players back. This series isn't going to throw them into a swoon, especially with Seattle playing Houston, they aren't going to lose much ground if any if Seattle wins one game in that series. Plus, sweeping teams is hard and I never expect a sweep, I'll be glad for 2 wins.

If the O's got Heim they could DH Adley all the time.

I dunno, 81 OPS+ out of your everyday catcher is better than McCann, I suppose, at 71 OPS+, but he's a pretty automatic out himself.

Astros continuing to restore order in the AL West won the Framber-Kirby duel to set themselves up for the sweep and grow their lead to 6 games on the Rangers and Max Scherzer's fatigued arm entering Sunday.

Seattle offensive woes - they couldn't do better than Ryan Bliss and Jonatan Clase as due batters up against Hader in the bottom of the 9th.     Victor Robles hit 2nd for them tonight against the LHP.    Vladimir Guerrero will be most welcome in a week if that scenario comes to pass.

Andrew Heaney is our daddy. But good to be on the right side of a series again. Let's keep it up against Miami.

Maybe he should be our trade target so to keep him from going to another playoff team we might face.

    • Well, no one is calling him a total bust.    Nice try.
    • Or leave a gap of three cars in front of them in a LH turn lane resulting in the people behind them not even being able to get in the LH turn lane
    • The Rays arrive to start a 10-game roadtrip off a 2-2 split with Minnesota, as Pablo Lopez beat Taj Bradley in the finale, costing them a chance to tie the Red Sox for 3rd place.   Bradley threw a good game, so the bullpen is in good order, though they are in closer by committee role with Fairbanks on the IL. AL Active Roster K-bb standing at 40 innings as SP, a batch of 68 this morning. (51) Kremer v. (58) Baz (20) Eflin v. (24) Pepiot (29) Burnes v. (34) Littell Baz is fundamentally Grayson Rodriguez on draft pedigree, now about 2 years past his TJ procedure.    He still hasn't put it all back together, and he's an important player for how good TBR can be the next couple years, same as Grayson with us. Some of Pepiot's changeup metrics are excellent, a challenge for Cowser as he tries to outplay Austin Wells and the Rookie of the Year field with 3.5 weeks to go. Burnes is working on not letting his overall track record get goofed up further, though I'm sure his agent is smiling at stuff like it randomly taking Blake Snell 42 pitches to complete an inning, and oops there's a 1-inning start for your club's bullpen.    His guy never does that. It was cool seeing Junior Caminero tear up at getting to take the field with his childhood idol Manny Machado.    Also makes me feel old.    ESPN Kiley wrote the other day he momentarily gives TBR the "#1 farm system" by his rankings, with Holliday graduated.    Caminero is at 110 AB's and should graduate himself next week - congrats Rays on the momentary distinction. Yandy and Caminero, 12 years apart in Age, are the two hottest bats.    It is favorable for us Yandy isn't a Yankee or Astro right now. Watching Elias' Orioles for clues any ways they are different than the Rays he lavishly praised coming into the AL East, one appears to be the club's willingness to pay Zach Eflin 1/18 on a 1-year term.   Next season we'll see how strongly Shane McClanahan returns to boost his expected Arb earnings and oncoming trade out of Tampa date.    Jackson Baumeister had another big game last night.
    • Definitely a total bust.  Not sure if he should even come back next year.
    • got Seth Johnson (injured at the time and years away for 0 ( trey Mancini ) and chase for 225,000 bonus money, basically an Oriole first because ME first year. Thats why you acquire minor league assets, to either feed the ML team or trade assets.
    • Refs are getting universally crushed by everyone. They just didn’t call things the same for both sides.
    • The second one.  Or stopped at a red light and only put their blinker on when the light turns green.  Or swing out to the right to make a left turn.
