According to Diamond Leung, the Dodgers have signed infielder Ramon Nivar to a minor-league deal and assigned him to Double-A Chattanooga.

The 29-year-old Nivar hasn't appeared in the majors since 2005, last with the Orioles. Like quite a few former major-leaguers, Nivar was playing for the independent-league Newark Bears this season, where he posted a .331 average and .810 OPS in 127 at-bats.

Bruce Chen allowed four earned runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings Saturday as his Royals fell to the Pirates.

Chen was making his first start in a Kansas City uniform. His control wasn't terrible (zero walks and 54 of 76 pitches for strikes), but he simply looked like an over matched pitcher. He was 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA over his last seven Triple-A outings, but that success won't necessarily translate to the major leagues. At least it didn't tonight.

Two blasts from the past.

Alex Cintron has signed a minor league deal with the Mariners.

B.J. Ryan was released by the Blue Jays, eating nearly $15M left on his contract that runs through the end of 2010.

As someone who was eagerly on board the "we should pay whatever needed to keep him here" bandwagon at the end of BJ Ryan's tenure... I must say I'm shocked at his career since leaving the Birds. (not to mention, a little pleased that we didn't lunge for him ;))
